Earth Day, there’s some exceptionally good news. Because of the cessation of so much activity, due to the coronavirus pandemic, the air has cleared dramatically; cities around the world, including Mumbai and Los Angeles, are smog-free. Also, the murk in the waters of Venice’s canals and the waves from motorboats are gone, revealing fish and plants in the clear Adriatic water.

Jan Vrins, global energy leader at Guidehouse, the world-circling consultancy, was so excited by the clearing that he posted and tweeted a picture taken from a town in the Punjab where Himalayan peaks are visible for the first time in 30 years.

The message here is very hopeful: With some moderation in human activity, we can save the environment and ourselves.

The research was recently published by a team at the Academy of Military Medical Sciences in the federal agency’s Emerging Infectious Diseases Journal. “The aerosol distribution characteristics … indicate that the transmission distance of [COVID-19] might be 4 m (more than 13 feet) ” the report says.

Additionally, the research found that the virus can linger on shoes and function as carriers of the coronavirus.

“Furthermore, half of the samples from the soles of the ICU medical staff shoes tested positive,” the researchers wrote of samples taken at Huoshenshan Hospital in Wuhan, China. “Therefore, the soles of medical staff shoes might function as carriers.”

    CDC Releases New Covid-19 Guidance

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has eased some of the physical distancing guidelines for people who’ve been exposed to the new coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2.

The guidance, which updated Wednesday, will allow asymptomatic people who’ve been exposed to the virus to go back to work as long they take their temperature twice a day, practice physical distancing, and wear a face mask.

The new guidance has sparked a fiery debate among health experts.

Some think letting people exposed to the new coronavirus get back to essential work is crucial to keep certain essential businesses and hospitals in motion.

Others believe doing so will open the floodgates and trigger a second wave of COVID-19.

You're not supposed to reuse the common N95 filtering facepiece respirator mask. But given that they're almost impossible to find or impossible to afford amid the coronavirus pandemic, here are some acceptable methods to decontaminate and reuse common N95 masks.

How to clean and reuse an N95 mask - CNET

    Method 2: Steaming or boiling

Dr. Tsai says submerging an N95 in 125C/260F degree steam or boiling water for 3 minutes will disinfect the mask without significantly reducing its filtration efficiency (FE). Don't excessively stir the mask if you boil it, use only enough manipulation to keep it submerged. If your mask has paper outer and inner layers, neither the steam or boiling methods are advisable as they will disintegrate those paper layers that hold the filter medium between them.

Our ability to reopen the economy ultimately depends on our ability to better understand the spread and risk of the virus,” said Betsey Stevenson, a University of Michigan economist who worked on the White House Council of Economic Advisers under President Barack Obama. “It’s also quite likely that we will need to figure out how to reopen the economy with the virus remaining a threat.”

Hotel conference rooms are not likely to be filled anytime soon as the coronavirus outbreak continues to shutter large parts of the United States economy.

Public health experts are beginning to make predictions about when coronavirus infection rates will peak. Economists are calculating when the cost of continuing to shutter restaurants, shopping malls and other businesses — a move that has already pushed some 10 million Americans into unemployment, with millions more on the way — will outweigh the savings from further efforts to slow the virus once the infection curve has flattened out.
