Julian was employed by a contractor for the arena, Service First Janitorial.

His mother said he was saving money to visit his girlfriend in Mexico for the holidays.

"He was very happy, very loving," his mother said in Spanish. "He took good care of me."

Dickies Arena is owned by the city of Fort Worth, but managed by a nonprofit company, Trail Drive Management Corp.

Trail Drive issued a statement expressing condolences to the victim's family and said they were cooperating with the investigation.

But managers declined to answer questions about whether the gate has a safety mechanism or was malfunctioning at the time.

This is happening now to nurses who do once a week cleanings, what do you think the results would be of cleaners who use disinfectant everyday? -Matt

Exposure reduction strategies needed now as regular use of disinfectants by female nurses linked to the development of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), study finds.

Researchers from Harvard University and the French National Institute of Health and Medical Research (Inserm) analyzed data from more than 73,000 nurses employed in US hospitals between 2009 and 2015 and were part of the Nurses’ Health Study II

. No participants had COPD—a group of lung diseases including chronic bronchitis and emphysema—at the outset of this study. By the end, 582 nurses were diagnosed with COPD.

Though this study was not designed to uncover an explicit causal link, the authors suggest the findings “Provide further evidence of an adverse association between disinfectants and cleaning products and respiratory health.”

    Exposure common

This most recent study found almost 23 per cent of nurses used disinfectants at least once a week to clean work surfaces and 19 per cent to clean medical instruments. Overall, this use was found to increase risk of developing COPD by 35 per cent compared to those not exposed. Those using disinfectants more often – four to seven days per week – had an even greater risk.

The researchers also looked at specific disinfectants finding glutaraldehyde, hydrogen peroxide, hypochlorite bleach, alcohol and quaternary ammonium compounds were associated with excess risk for developing COPD ranging from 25 to 36 per cent. Further still, exposure to multiple products, such as hypochlorite bleach or hydrogen peroxide and aldehydes was found to significantly increase risk...

The janitorial services industry is witnessing demand from both the commercial and residential sectors that will increase at an exponential rate. In the commercial sector, window cleaning, vacuuming, floor care, and other services such as kit cleaning and dusting are some of the types of janitorial services that are in high demand.

Meanwhile, in the residential sector, factors such as improvement in the purchasing power of the middle-class demography will create the demand for services such as maid services, carpet cleaning, and window cleaning. This will drive the spend momentum of the janitorial services industry at a CAGR of over 4% between 2018-2022.

National custodial services provider Diversified Maintenance Systems LLC will pay $450,000 and adopt a targeted hiring plan to resolve EEOC allegations that it refused to hire black applicants for porter and custodian jobs in the Maryland, Washington, D.C., and Philadelphia region.

The settlement, which was approved Nov. 22 by the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland, also requires Diversified to pay $300,000 for allegedly subjecting a black area manager to racial harassment and then demoting and ultimately firing him for complaining. Syracuse, N.Y. - Keri Courtwright was working her usual night shift at Syracuse University last week when she was asked to clean up some racist graffiti.

When the janitor read the words -- a hateful description of Asians -- she felt angry. As she scrubbed the black marker off the wall of a university building, she wondered what she could do to fight the ugliness.

The answer that came to her in that quiet, empty hallway was simple: Spread kindness.

A California law that requires the state’s janitorial contractors to train its staff about sexual harassment and abuse has been updated to define how the process will work.

The initial law, Assembly Bill 1978, recognized the threats faced by many women cleaning offices alone at night and increased protections by initiating a statewide program to formally address the issue. It became law Jan. 1, 2019, after it was signed by then-Gov. Jerry Brown in 2016.

Last month, Gov. Gavin Newson signed AB 547, a bill that sets up training standards in the state’s Labor Code. Unlike most sexual harassment training in California, which is typically provided by attorneys, in-house human resources officials or outside consultants, janitors will learn about their rights from people who have endured similar experiences.
