Cleaners, in all sectors of the industry, following the proper procedures and guidelines is crucial for the health and safety of everyone involved. Including the general public. Bloodborne pathogens are a very real threat, and precaution should always be used when handling a clean up that contains potential bodily fluids, or syringes.
Bloodborne pathogens can enter the body through mucus membranes, such as the eyes, mouth, and nose. They can also enter through breaks in the skin such as a cut on the hand. That is why it is imperative that proper PPE be used at all times. This includes, gloves, safety glasses, and a mask. With Covid-19 being a risk as well, we should always have the proper PPE on hand.
As I previously stated, following proper procedures and guidelines is crucial for the safety of the general public as well. This is why all potentially infectious material, including the towels used on a jobsite that may contain bloodborne pathogens, should be disposed of in properly marked biohazard bags and containers, not thrown in with the regular trash.
By doing the right thing, and keeping everyone involved safe, we can minimize the risks and ensure a cleaner, safer, home or commercial environment.
