An apparent hazardous materials incident at a South Toledo apartment complex sent four firefighters to an area hospital Thursday.
Around 11 a.m., the Toledo Fire & Rescue Department responded to a report of a person being overcome by an unknown odor at the Westland Gardens Apartments, 1752 Westland Gardens Rd.
Upon arriving, firefighters evacuated the entire building and conducted a room-by-room search. More than a dozen pieces of emergency equipment responded to the scene, including the hazmat unit and multiple medic and rescue units.
Sheldon Collins, TFD public information officer, said the number of resources was routine for fume-related concerns, noting that hazmat suits are requested if the team reports seeing or smelling something. He said the fumes Thursday were odorous, but not visible...

Severe weather will again unleash on a large stretch of the United States from Texas through the Midwest, Great Lakes region and parts of the Northeast on May 1, forecasters said.
The south-central part of the country, including parts of Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Missouri, has endured days on end of dangerous weather, including tornadoes and flooding that killed two in Oklahoma. The National Weather Service said forward motion of the weather system that stalled over the region would spell a brief reprieve for the region during the day before storms redevelop later in the evening through May 2.
Meanwhile, the storm system will refocus on the Mid-Mississippi Valley and the Midwest and reach the Great Lakes by night, the weather service said. States in the Mid-Mississippi, Ohio and Tennessee valleys, stretching all the way into parts of Pennsylvania and western New York, could see thunderstorms, damaging winds, hail and a possible isolated tornado, the weather service said.

The number of measles cases associated with an outbreak in western Texas has grown to 400, with 73 cases reported over the last three days, according to new data released Friday.
Almost all of the cases are in unvaccinated individuals or in individuals whose vaccination status is unknown, according to the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS). At least 41 people have been hospitalized so far.
Children and teenagers between ages 5 and 17 make up the majority of cases at 164, followed by children ages 4 and under comprising 131 cases, according to the data.
It comes as the CDC has so far confirmed 483 measles cases this year in at least 19 states: Alaska, California, Florida, Georgia, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Texas, Vermont and Washington
This is likely an undercount due to delays in states reporting cases to the federal health agency.

The National Guard is being deployed as residents across the U.S. began to assess the fallout from dozens of tornadoes, wildfires, and dust storms that left at least 42 people dead and hundreds of decimated buildings in their wake over the weekend.
Field crews from weather service offices across the central and eastern U.S. began surveying the damage Sunday after deaths were reported in Kansas, Mississippi, Arkansas, Texas, Alabama, Missouri, and Oklahoma, where almost 300 houses and structures were destroyed by wildfires. As clean-up begins for some, parts of the Central and Southern High Plains will be at risk for extreme or critical fire weather Monday, the National Weather Service said.
Nationwide, there were over 130,000 power outages Monday morning, according to USA TODAY's outage tracker, including over 25,000 outages in Missouri, where at least a dozen people were killed and an EF-3 tornado with peak winds of 140 mph was reported Saturday.

San Francisco — Janitorial workers can lower their risk of musculoskeletal injuries by rotating job tasks and, when possible, reducing force, University of California researchers say.
Their finding is included in a forthcoming report, which the researchers discussed during a recent webinar conducted by the Center for Occupational and Environmental Health at UC Berkeley.
Janitors “perform physically demanding work” that “can result in low back pain and other musculoskeletal disorders,” said study co-author Melissa Afterman, a certified ergonomist and instructor at UC San Francisco.
The team surveyed 416 janitors in California as part of the study and found that nearly 85% reported experiencing moderate to severe pain in at least one body region over the past month, with all regions affected similarly.

Patients with lowered immune defenses, and in some hospitals, poor adherence to hygiene protocols, allow HAIs to thrive. Furthermore, antibiotics are widely used in hospitals, which tends to select for hardy, resistant strains of bacteria. When such resistance genes lie on mobile genetic elements, they can even jump between bacterial species, potentially leading to novel diseases.
"Here we show that hospital sink drains host bacterial populations that change over time, despite impeccable cleaning protocols in the particular hospital we looked at," said Dr. Margarita Gomila, a professor at the University of the Balearic Islands in Spain, and the senior author of a study in Frontiers In Microbiology.
"These results highlight that controlling bacterial growth in drains, and preventing colonization by new strains of such hard-to-disinfect niches, is likely a global problem."
