Midwest Meat Plant Cleaning Service Fined $1.5M for Hiring Minors

One of the country’s largest cleaning services for food processing companies employed more than 100 children in dangerous jobs at 13 meatpacking plants across the country, the U.S. Department of Labor said in early March as it announced over $1.5 million in civil penalties.

The investigation into Packers Sanitation Services Inc., or PSSI, began last summer. Department officials searched three meatpacking plants owned by JBS USA and Turkey Valley Farms in Nebraska and Minnesota, and found 31 underage workers as young as 13. They also searched PSSI’s headquarters in Kieler, Wisconsin. Underage workers were found at plants in eight states.

The T681 is a small ride-on scrubber that’s maneuverable for its size but has larger solution and recovery tanks than our existing models, allowing the machine to be more productive by cleaning more square footage in less time. The T681 features intuitive controls that allow for easy operation in medium to large spaces such as retail stores, hospitals and schools. The T981 is a ride-on scrubber that’s easy to operate and maintain, helping customers meet facilities’ cleaning performance needs with easy-to-choose pre-set programs. The T981 is well suited for cleaning light-to-medium dirt in large spaces such as retail, logistics and light industrial applications.

How antimicrobial coatings can help maintain cleanliness

The ebb and flow of a hospital setting is ceaselessly dynamic, with patients, visitors and staff making up a high volume of foot traffic travelling through corridors daily. It is no surprise that there is widespread exposure to microorganisms in this environment, and it is a constant struggle for healthcare providers to maintain clean conditions to limit the proliferation of bacteria. Regular cleaning is crucial; however, standard disinfectants retain limited residual activity after application, leaving high touch surfaces vulnerable to contamination through direct contact or airborne droplets.

    Enhancing hospital cleanliness

Antimicrobial coatings, like LapisShield by Microban, work as built-in adjuncts to normal cleaning practices, providing long-lasting protection that does not wear away to surfaces such as hospital curtains, countertops, clipboards and equipment. The active ingredient in this example works by disrupting internal enzymes, blocking metabolic pathways, and creating an inhospitable environment to interrupt bacterial reproduction.

Her son was brutally murdered in his Columbus apartment, then his friends received a $9,000 bill for cleanup

COLUMBUS — After Eric Cavanaugh was murdered in the apartment he shared with his best friends, they were left with a $9,000 crime scene clean-up bill.

It's something Eric's mother says makes no sense.

“It’s mindboggling, it’s nauseating, it’s infuriating,” said Susanne Cavanaugh, Eric's mother.

Eric Cavanaugh graduated from Columbus East High School. His mother says he was full of hopes and dreams like any other 19-year-old.

The teens’ renter’s insurance covered $2,000, the maximum under their policy for “biohazard cleanup.”

Pictures of the aftermath of the cleanup show the company ripped out blood-stained carpet and cut holes in furniture to remove blood stains.

County janitorial companies must protect workers’ rights or lose their contracts, supervisors decide

In a 4-1 vote, the board directed the contracting department to negotiate with current contractors to incorporate the new labor standards into existing contracts for janitorial, landscaping and security services, and authorized the agency to solicit bids for that work if an agreement can’t be reached. Supervisor Jim Desmond objected, saying new contracts would be too expensive.

Strikers wearing safety vests and purple T-shirts picket, carrying signs saying "Nova Unfair" and "Justice for janitors."

The new county policy protects janitors, landscapers and security staff against wage theft, sexual harassment and other unfair work practices by county contractors, setting wage standards and creating a wage-theft fund to reimburse employees. But the policy, passed in December, doesn’t apply to contracts entered before that.

Long COVID Now Looks like a Neurological Disease, Helping Doctors to Focus Treatments

People with long COVID have symptoms such as pain, extreme fatigue and “brain fog,” or difficulty concentrating or remembering things. As of February 2022, the syndrome was estimated to affect about 16 million adults in the U.S. and had forced between two million and four million Americans out of the workforce, many of whom have yet to return. Long COVID often arises in otherwise healthy young people, and it can follow even a mild initial infection. Graphic highlights various ways SARS-CoV-2 can affect the brain and nerves, either by accessing and lingering in nervous system tissues or by stimulating the immune system to react in ways that damage the brain.

The risk appears at least slightly higher in people who were hospitalized for COVID and in older adults (who end up in the hospital more often). Women and those at socioeconomic disadvantage also face higher risk, as do people who smoke, are obese, or have any of an array of health conditions, particularly autoimmune disease. Vaccination appears to reduce the danger but does not entirely prevent long COVID.

The Future of Long COVID - This emergency is not about to end.

COVID still lacks a universal clinical definition and a standard diagnosis protocol; there’s no consensus on its prevalence, or even what symptoms fall under its purview. Although experts now agree that long COVID does not refer to a single illness, but rather is an umbrella term, like cancer,

Graphic of a coronavirus particle with a hole at the center, like a tunnel

they disagree on the number of subtypes that fall within it and how, exactly, each might manifest. Some risk factors—among them, a COVID hospitalization, female sex, and certain preexisting medical conditions—have been identified, but researchers are still trying to identify others amid fluctuating population immunity and the endless slog of viral variants.

The Covid emergency in the U.S. ends May 11. HHS officials say here’s what to expect

The Health and Human Services Department on Thursday laid out what will change and will remain the same when the three-year-long Covid public health emergency ends in May.

Health Secretary Xavier Becerra officially informed state governors on Thursday that he is renewing the declaration a final time but plans to let the emergency expire on May 11. The White House had already informed Congress of these plans last week.

HHS officials in a call with reporters laid out what the the public can expect when the emergency ends.

People walk past a COVID-19 walk up testing site on July 28, 2022 in New York City.

    Immediate changes:

    • People with private health insurance may have to pay for Covid tests, both over the counter and lab, depending on their plan.
    • Seniors with Medicare Part B will start paying for over-the-counter tests, though the program will cover lab tests.
    • Hospitals will lose flexibility to expand capacity in response to surges...
