One of the country’s largest cleaning services for food processing companies employed more than 100 children in dangerous jobs at 13 meatpacking plants across the country, the U.S. Department of Labor said in early March as it announced over $1.5 million in civil penalties.
The investigation into Packers Sanitation Services Inc., or PSSI, began last summer. Department officials searched three meatpacking plants owned by JBS USA and Turkey Valley Farms in Nebraska and Minnesota, and found 31 underage workers as young as 13. They also searched PSSI’s headquarters in Kieler, Wisconsin. Underage workers were found at plants in eight states.

The ebb and flow of a hospital setting is ceaselessly dynamic, with patients, visitors and staff making up a high volume of foot traffic travelling through corridors daily. It is no surprise that there is widespread exposure to microorganisms in this environment, and it is a constant struggle for healthcare providers to maintain clean conditions to limit the proliferation of bacteria. Regular cleaning is crucial; however, standard disinfectants retain limited residual activity after application, leaving high touch surfaces vulnerable to contamination through direct contact or airborne droplets.
Enhancing hospital cleanliness
Antimicrobial coatings, like LapisShield by Microban, work as built-in adjuncts to normal cleaning practices, providing long-lasting protection that does not wear away to surfaces such as hospital curtains, countertops, clipboards and equipment. The active ingredient in this example works by disrupting internal enzymes, blocking metabolic pathways, and creating an inhospitable environment to interrupt bacterial reproduction.

COLUMBUS — After Eric Cavanaugh was murdered in the apartment he shared with his best friends, they were left with a $9,000 crime scene clean-up bill.
It's something Eric's mother says makes no sense.
“It’s mindboggling, it’s nauseating, it’s infuriating,” said Susanne Cavanaugh, Eric's mother.
Eric Cavanaugh graduated from Columbus East High School. His mother says he was full of hopes and dreams like any other 19-year-old.

In a 4-1 vote, the board directed the contracting department to negotiate with current contractors to incorporate the new labor standards into existing contracts for janitorial, landscaping and security services, and authorized the agency to solicit bids for that work if an agreement can’t be reached. Supervisor Jim Desmond objected, saying new contracts would be too expensive.
The new county policy protects janitors, landscapers and security staff against wage theft, sexual harassment and other unfair work practices by county contractors, setting wage standards and creating a wage-theft fund to reimburse employees. But the policy, passed in December, doesn’t apply to contracts entered before that.

The risk appears at least slightly higher in people who were hospitalized for COVID and in older adults (who end up in the hospital more often). Women and those at socioeconomic disadvantage also face higher risk, as do people who smoke, are obese, or have any of an array of health conditions, particularly autoimmune disease. Vaccination appears to reduce the danger but does not entirely prevent long COVID.

The Future of Long COVID - This emergency is not about to end.
COVID still lacks a universal clinical definition and a standard diagnosis protocol; there’s no consensus on its prevalence, or even what symptoms fall under its purview. Although experts now agree that long COVID does not refer to a single illness, but rather is an umbrella term, like cancer,
they disagree on the number of subtypes that fall within it and how, exactly, each might manifest. Some risk factors—among them, a COVID hospitalization, female sex, and certain preexisting medical conditions—have been identified, but researchers are still trying to identify others amid fluctuating population immunity and the endless slog of viral variants.
