In the cleaning industry, knowledge is just as important as the tools we use. One critical area of understanding is bloodborne pathogens—infectious microorganisms found in human blood that can cause diseases such as hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and HIV. For businesses that provide cleaning services to medical offices, dental clinics, and other professional spaces, proper training in handling biohazards is essential for both safety and compliance.

At Mama T’s Cleaning, we recognize the responsibility we hold in maintaining safe and sanitary environments. Our staff is trained in OSHA’s Bloodborne Pathogens Standard, ensuring that they know how to properly handle potential biohazards, dispose of waste safely, and protect themselves and others from exposure. While traditional cleaning products may rely on harsh chemicals to disinfect, we take a different approach—using eco-friendly, non-toxic solutions that effectively eliminate pathogens while protecting human health and the environment.

Proper training in bloodborne pathogens helps prevent workplace injuries, reduces the risk of contamination, and ensures that cleaning professionals can perform their jobs with confidence. It also reinforces the trust our clients place in us, knowing that their spaces are not only clean but also handled with the highest standards of safety and care. By prioritizing both health and environmental responsibility, Mama T’s Cleaning continues to uphold our commitment to “Cleanly Caring” for our community.

The Importance of Cleaning Employees & Staff Knowing About Bloodborne Pathogens

Cleaning employees and staff play a crucial role in maintaining a safe and sanitary environment, especially when dealing with potential bloodborne pathogens (BBPs). Bloodborne pathogens, such as HIV, Hepatitis B (HBV), and Hepatitis C (HCV), are harmful microorganisms found in human blood and bodily fluids that can cause serious diseases. Without proper knowledge and training, cleaning staff may unknowingly expose themselves and others to these risks. Understanding OSHA’s Bloodborne Pathogens Standard helps workers take the necessary precautions to prevent contamination and ensure a safe workspace.

Proper training in handling bloodborne pathogens teaches employees how to identify risks, use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), and follow correct cleaning and disposal procedures. For instance, using gloves, face shields, and approved disinfectants can significantly reduce the risk of infection. Employees should also be familiar with procedures for safely cleaning blood spills, handling sharps, and disposing of contaminated waste in biohazard containers. By following strict safety protocols, cleaning staff can minimize health hazards and prevent workplace illnesses.

Employers must prioritize ongoing BBP training and compliance to ensure the safety of their workforce and the public. Regular education sessions, proper sanitation protocols, and access to necessary safety equipment empower cleaning staff to handle biohazard situations with confidence. A well-informed cleaning team not only protects themselves but also helps prevent the spread of infectious diseases, creating a healthier and safer environment for everyone.

Bloodborne pathogens are microorganisms that are in human blood and has the potential to cause various disease if exposed. These diseases may include HIV/AIDS, hepatitis b, hepatitis c, malaria, and syphilis. The CDC reported that approximately 5.6 million healthcare and janitorial service workers are at risk of exposure to bloodborne pathogens. Therefore, we must maintain gaining knowledge of bloodborne pathogens.

It's important to have knowledge of bloodborne pathogens because when knowledge is applied correctly it reduces the potential of a threat. Continually educating yourself on OSHA guidelines keeps the employer and their employees safe, also eliminates exposure in the workplace. With the training and guidelines of OSHA, it teaches us that we should treat all bodily fluids as if they are contaminated since there is no way to differentiate between infected fluids and non-infected fluids.

In conclusion, educating ourselves about bloodborne pathogens should remain our priority. Annually educating ourselves and employees on the proper clean up of bodily fluids will continue to ensure workplace safety. Taking the initiative to meet OSHA guidelines will help you and others around you by limiting exposure.
