Why is it important for cleaning employees and staff to know about bloodborne pathogens

11 Sep 2024 2:55 PM | Christopher Maschino

It is importantant for cleaning employees and staff to know about bloodborne pathogens. Bloodborne pathogens could contain viruses, like HBV or HIV, in bodily fluids including saliva, vomit, and blood that can be transmitted through contact.

Contact to bloodborne pathogens could come through removal of trash, dealing with contaminated laundry, or cleaning up vomit or blood. Using the ‘universal caution approach’ which is believing and treating all bodily fluids as if they are contaminated is needed for safety of cleaning employees and staff when dealing with exposure to bodily fluids.

PPE is necessary for handling contaminated areas and exposed areas. Disinfect and sanitize or dispose of contaminated and exposed areas, tools and equipment. It is important to report any exposure to bloodborne pathogens!
