This will help you assess which areas need the most improvement and build a comprehensive plan around this. Next is to train the cleaning staff with the use of chemical and equipment handling and cleaning procedures. Afterwards, review the progress to make sure the green cleaning program is successful and implement any changes.

Safety While Working with Bloodborne Pathogens

Cleaning employees and other staff members may encounter blood or other potentially infectious materials while performing routine duties. Discarded needles, broken glass, contaminated laundry, bodily-fluid spills, and improperly handled waste can expose workers to bloodborne pathogens. These pathogens may included HBV or HCV or even HIV.

Training gives employees the knowledge needed to prevent exposure. Staff should know how to recognize hazards, follow standard precautions, wear appropriate personal protective equipment, and use approved cleaning and disinfecting procedures. Staff needs to remember to use the proper PPE. Such as gloves, mask and goggles.

Employees also need to know what to do if an exposure occurs. Immediate actions may include washing the affected area, flushing exposed eyes or mucous membranes, reporting the incident promptly, and seeking the medical evaluation provided under the employer's exposure-control procedures. Fast reporting allows the organization to document the event, evaluate the source of exposure when appropriate, and arrange timely follow-up. Workers should never hide an incident because they feel embarrassed or believe the exposure was minor.

Bloodborne-pathogen awareness protects more than the person doing the cleaning. Proper practices help prevent contamination from spreading to coworkers, visitors, patients, customers, and family members. Employers should reinforce training regularly, keep protective equipment and disposal supplies accessible, and maintain a clear exposure-control plan. When every employee understands both prevention and response, the workplace becomes safer, more prepared, and more supportive of everyone's health.

Medical and healthcare cleaning practices can provide valuable lessons for residential and commercial cleaning because they emphasize consistency, contamination control, proper procedures, and attention to high-touch surfaces. Homes, offices, restaurants, schools, retail businesses, and other facilities are not healthcare environments, but they still contain surfaces that are touched repeatedly throughout the day. Applying principles from healthcare cleaning, medical facility cleaning, infection prevention cleaning, environmental cleaning, and high-touch surface cleaning can help professional cleaners develop more systematic approaches to reducing soils and microorganisms in everyday environments.

One important practice is recognizing the difference between cleaning and disinfecting. Cleaning physically removes dirt, organic matter, and contaminants, while disinfecting uses an appropriate product to reduce or destroy specified microorganisms on surfaces according to the product's directions. In residential and commercial environments, cleaners can apply this knowledge by cleaning surfaces properly before disinfecting when required, using products only on compatible surfaces, observing required disinfectant contact or dwell times, and focusing additional attention on high-touch areas such as door handles, light switches, faucets, restroom fixtures, counters, and shared equipment. These infection-control cleaning and disinfecting practices can be especially valuable when illness has occurred or when a facility has increased sanitation needs.

Preventing cross-contamination is another healthcare cleaning principle that can be adapted to everyday professional cleaning. Using clean microfiber cloths and mop materials, changing them appropriately between areas, maintaining cleaning equipment, practicing proper hand hygiene, wearing suitable personal protective equipment when needed, and following an organized cleaning sequence can help prevent contaminants from simply being moved from one surface or room to another. Professional cleaners can also use clearly established procedures for bathrooms, kitchens, common areas, and other higher-risk locations. Applying these principles thoughtfully can help protect cleaning employees, residents, workers, customers, and visitors while reducing unnecessary exposure to harmful bacteria, germs, and viruses.

Medical cleaning practices should be adapted to the actual risks of each environment rather than treating every home or business like a healthcare facility. The goal is to take proven concepts—including proper product use, contamination control, high-touch surface attention, hand hygiene, and consistent cleaning procedures—and apply them appropriately to residential cleaning, commercial cleaning, janitorial services, healthcare cleaning, and facility sanitation. By using informed cleaning practices, professional cleaners can contribute to cleaner and healthier spaces while helping limit the spread of potentially harmful microorganisms. Properly cleaning healthcare facilities is especially important because these environments serve patients who may be ill, injured, elderly, immunocompromised, or otherwise more vulnerable to infection. Medical offices, dental practices, clinics, hospitals, rehabilitation facilities, and other healthcare settings experience constant contact among patients, employees, visitors, equipment, and high-touch surfaces. Effective healthcare cleaning, medical facility cleaning, and healthcare janitorial services help remove soils and contaminants and support the infection prevention practices established by the healthcare facility. Clean waiting rooms, treatment areas, restrooms, floors, and frequently touched surfaces also contribute to a professional environment where patients can feel confident about their surroundings.

Healthcare cleaning requires more than simply making a facility look clean. Professional cleaners must understand the difference between cleaning and disinfecting, follow product labels and required contact times, use appropriate personal protective equipment, and follow procedures designed to prevent cross-contamination. Healthcare facility cleaning, medical office cleaning, disinfecting services, high-touch surface cleaning, infection prevention cleaning, and healthcare environmental services all require careful procedures and consistent attention to detail. Proper training, cleaning schedules, responsible chemical handling, appropriate equipment, and clear communication with the healthcare facility help create a more effective cleaning program and support a cleaner, safer environment for patients, healthcare professionals, visitors, and cleaning staff.

Choosing the right cleaning provider is therefore an important decision for any healthcare organization. Facilities looking for professional janitorial services, commercial cleaning, medical office cleaning, clinic cleaning, healthcare cleaning services, or facility sanitation services should consider a provider's training, procedures, reliability, communication, and ability to follow facility-specific requirements. Healthcare organizations can use the IJCSA Janitorial Service Directory to locate professional cleaning and janitorial companies serving their area: https://www.ijcsa.org/Janitorial-Service-Directory-Find-A-Janitorial-Service-JanitorialServices

First in order to understand why it’s important to know about handling bloodborne pathogens, it’s a good idea to understand the potential dangers.  So what exactly are Bloodborne pathogens?  Bloodborne pathogens are microorganisms in the human blood that can cause disease in humans. OSHA defines blood to mean human blood, human blood components, and products made from human blood. [1]

Now that we know what bloodborne pathogens are, why is it important to have knowledge of handling them? The CDC estimates that 5.6 million workers in the health care industry and related occupations are at risk of occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens, including human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), hepatitis B virus (HBV), hepatitis C virus (HCV), and other diseases. [2]. You and your colleagues are likely included in that number and are working in an industry where exposure and potential risks of infections are very high and possibly life changing. In order to reduce these risk, a significant and comprehensive focus on educating yourself and knowing what it is you may be exposed to and how to prevent injury, infection, and possibly death must take place.

Not only does knowing about bloodborne pathogens help reduce risk related to exposure, infection, and death, it also helps foster better decision making and efficiency on the job at handling scenarios that arise. This gives employees the confidence needed to handle such task and puts customers at ease in knowing they have hired someone that is properly training and can get the job done correctly. It is not only important for employees and companies to know about blood-borne pathogens it is of upmost urgency and at great consequence that they educate themselves on this topic when working in these types of environments.
