The Importance of Cleaning Staff Understanding Bloodborne Pathogens

20 Oct 2026 6:50 PM | Danny Miles

Cleaning employees and staff routinely work in environments where they may encounter blood or other potentially infectious materials. These encounters are not limited to healthcare settings. Blood, bodily fluids, used bandages, broken glass, discarded sharps, and contaminated waste can be found in homes, offices, restaurants, restrooms, schools, and many other facilities. Understanding bloodborne pathogens helps cleaning professionals recognize that what may initially appear to be an ordinary cleaning task can sometimes present a health and safety hazard.

Bloodborne pathogens are microorganisms in human blood that can cause disease, including hepatitis B (HBV), hepatitis C (HCV), and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Because it is impossible to determine by appearance whether blood or other potentially infectious material carries a pathogen, cleaning staff should understand the importance of treating potential exposures with appropriate caution. Knowledge of proper personal protective equipment, hand hygiene, disinfection procedures, and safe handling of contaminated waste and sharps can significantly reduce the risk of accidental exposure.

Awareness is equally important when an exposure does occur. Needlesticks, cuts from contaminated objects, splashes to the eyes or mouth, and contact with broken or damaged skin can create potential routes of exposure. Knowing how to recognize these situations and respond promptly can help protect the health of the employee and those around them. Bloodborne pathogen knowledge is therefore an important part of workplace safety, helping cleaning professionals identify hazards, make informed decisions, and perform their work with greater confidence and care.
