Safety while working with Bloodborne Pathogens

Safety While Working with Bloodborne Pathogens

Cleaning employees and other staff members may encounter blood or other potentially infectious materials while performing routine duties. Discarded needles, broken glass, contaminated laundry, bodily-fluid spills, and improperly handled waste can expose workers to bloodborne pathogens. These pathogens may included HBV or HCV or even HIV.

Training gives employees the knowledge needed to prevent exposure. Staff should know how to recognize hazards, follow standard precautions, wear appropriate personal protective equipment, and use approved cleaning and disinfecting procedures. Staff needs to remember to use the proper PPE. Such as gloves, mask and goggles.

Employees also need to know what to do if an exposure occurs. Immediate actions may include washing the affected area, flushing exposed eyes or mucous membranes, reporting the incident promptly, and seeking the medical evaluation provided under the employer's exposure-control procedures. Fast reporting allows the organization to document the event, evaluate the source of exposure when appropriate, and arrange timely follow-up. Workers should never hide an incident because they feel embarrassed or believe the exposure was minor.

Bloodborne-pathogen awareness protects more than the person doing the cleaning. Proper practices help prevent contamination from spreading to coworkers, visitors, patients, customers, and family members. Employers should reinforce training regularly, keep protective equipment and disposal supplies accessible, and maintain a clear exposure-control plan. When every employee understands both prevention and response, the workplace becomes safer, more prepared, and more supportive of everyone's health.
