Jemsion and Mason’s plan on implementing a green clean service program for a proposed facility includes: first looking at the proposed facility and taking in account the size, square footage, and what needs to be done. The next step would be to find out what the facility is being used for and what is the foot traffic of the building. Last a list of cleaning products currently being used, if any, would be collected.

After gathering this information then a plan can be implemented. Jemison and Mason would collaborate with the owner on types of green cleaning products and the best way to use them and when cleaning should take place.

With so many negatives that come along with traditional cleaning methods, going green seems like a no thought choice. So many positives can come by just making this simple choice to be more aware of what is in the products we are cleaning with.

Harmful chemicals are everywhere and we come in contact with them no matter where we are or what we are doing. The choice to switch and provide a natural clean vs using something that can leave harsh residues on surfaces and leave lingering particles in the air that we are then forced to breathe in can be very hard on our respiratory system causing irritation in our lungs, causing wheezing and shortness in breath.

Harsh chemicals can also affect our eyes causing itchiness, redness and just be plain out irritating. These are just a few of the adverse side effects and that doesn’t account for the fact that these chemicals can also be absorbed through our skin which can be even more damaging. Since there is no filter to dilute these out, they can have direct effects on our liver and kidney functions.

Every time we make a conscious choice to use a green product we are not only working to make it a healthier and safer location for those cleaning, but also any person working in these areas. We are also doing our part to help protect the environment by reducing our carbon footprint and we are able to help reduce any additional effects to our ozone layer.

Green products are natural which makes them safer to use since there are no chemicals and can be found in nature. There are no adverse effects when going back into the environment and requires no additional forms of processing to make water ways safe or having to worry about what toxic gas could be made if they end up mixing together in water processing plants.

Saying that you are a green cleaner isn’t enough, you need to make sure you are working with someone that is certified in this manner. Thanks to IJCSA you can be sure that the cleaning company you are using has been through the training and is aware of the processes involved in being green. View the Green IJCSA Cleaning Service Directory to see that we are in fact certified.

Some of the products we used every day to clean our surroundings can affect our health and the environment. These cleaners contain chemicals that have been linked to different common symptoms like allergies, skin reactions, headaches, depression, dizziness and asthma, just to mention some of them. Many chemical makers do not label their products with all of the ingredients and many of us don't look at what a cleaning product is made of.

Now, after learning how harmful so many of the popular cleaning products are we have started looking at the labels of the products that we use to serve our clients. We started using more natural green cleaning products like vinegar, baking soda and lemon having the same results.

We are happy because going green is a benefit for our customers and the environment.

We all know the New Year gives us a clean slate to work with when it comes to making improvements in our daily lives. Typically we resolve to exercise more, eat better, stick to a budget or pick up that new hobby. For this year I have compiled a list of eco friendly habits that are easy to adopt and stick to:

    1. I resolve to kick the plastic water bottle habit: Plastic water bottles are bad for the environment, no question. Last year Americans consumed over 50 billion of them. This is a serious habit we here in Trinidad and Tobago need to kick and quickly. Bring your own refillable stainless steel bottle filled with water from home whenever you go out. If the water from your tap isn’t to your liking then add a filtration system or get one of those pitchers that sit on the counter. Trust me; bottled water that you have purchased isn’t that much better than water from your tap.

    2. I resolve to bring my own bags with me to the grocery store: This is a no brainer. Most of us by now should have already adopted this habit. Try to take it one step further by bringing your own bags whenever you go shopping for anything in general, not just food.

    3. I resolve to walk or bike whenever possible: This is one that I will admit took me awhile to get used to, as I love the privacy of being in my car alone.

    4. I resolve to make small changes at home: Small changes at home can have a huge impact overall if everybody did them. Start by unplugging appliances when not in use like the toaster, coffee maker or microwave. Turn off the TV if no one is watching it. Also, connect your computer and peripherals to a power strip; that way at the end of the day you can disconnect them with just a flick of the switch (its best to turn off your computer instead of leaving it in hibernate or stand-by mode.) Wash your clothes in cold or the very least warm water and use the shorter cycle. Finally, change out your light bulbs to compact flourescent lights (CFLs).

    5. I resolve to start composting: This is a hard one, I know. I falter with this one myself but I do keep trying to stick with it.

    6. I resolve to use less paper: This one is easy and I have been having great success with it! First, I buy recycled content for everything (home and office). Next, I use both sides of the paper before I put it in a bin. Meaning, if one side is still clean then I put in my printer or fax; also I only print out materials or e-mails if I absolutely must have a hard copy of the item.

    7. I resolve to volunteer for something this year: Even if it’s just one day, give your time to a beach or park clean-up team in your neighbourhood. If you really want to make a big difference then put in sometime in a community garden. If there isn’t a community garden then start one. Find a natural spot that you can easily get to on a somewhat regular area and keep it litter free. All you need is a pair of work gloves, a supply of garbage bags, and a bit of time.

    8. I resolve to use eco-friendly cleaning products at all times and to avoid chlorine. There are so many good and effective green products on the market now, that there is no excuse for this one. You can even do a lot with just baking soda, white vinegar and water!

    9. I resolve to pay attention to where my food comes from: I am tempted to preach “buy local”, but realistically I know that is not always possible. But you can make sure your food (and even clothing) is produced in an ethical and sustainable way. So pay attention to labels such as the USDA organic and Fair Trade.

    10. Write a letter or (two). You don’t need to chain yourself to a tree in order to have your voice heard. Most large environmental organisations have information on their websites for contacting people in various levels of government regarding environmental issues. The pen can be mightier than the sword.

    11. I resolve to lead by example: Pass this article along to your friends and families as we all can use reminders every now and then on how to be eco-friendly this year!

    Happy Green New Year 2018!

Green cleaning programs benefit both local and global communities by reducing the amount of harmful chemicals in the environment.

By cutting back on the use of toxic-based products and considering the carbon footprint of cleaning activities, environmentally friendly programs create a healthier environment for humans, plants, and animals.

We are a start-up commercial cleaning company. We plan to use the carpet cleaning training for two main purposes to help us add value to the standard cleaning services we will offer and to ensure that the carpet cleaning staff is professionally trained, the same way.

The training provides us with a consistent resource that allows us to train new staff members and to allow seasoned cleaners to receive refresher training.
