Janitors never get enough credit. To most people they are just the guy you call when someone makes a mess. But imagine if there were no Janitors? Schools would be gross no-one would go to them. Its not like we can ask teachers to clean throw up off the floor in the hallway. They already have enough to do!

What does it mean to hire a professionally certified Janitor? Well it means that they know how to deal with messes! It means they are aware of bloodborne pathogens and hazardous chemicals. It means they wont make a grave mistake and turn a simple mess into a real ordeal. By spreading viruses or disease carrying fluid to other areas.

Simply put they are someone we can trust to clean, sanitize and maintain our facilities. Find a janitor to help clean your facility below and take peace of mind in knowing that they have been trained to do the job right!

    • The Importance of Properly Cleaning Healthcare Facilities

Proper cleaning is important across the board, but especially in healthcare facilities.  This is due to the nature of healthcare facilities.  First of all, the chances of someone being sick and/or contagious are much higher in a healthcare setting compared to say commercial office settings or retail spaces.  If people are sick, it is perfectly acceptable and expected for them to seek care.  Sick people are not expected in this same way to venture out to go shopping at the store or head into work.  Many work places discourage and will even send workers home if they suspect someone is sick, whereas healthcare settings welcome these people in with open arms.

The next element that compounds this already exaggerated element of risk is the nature of the care that occurs when people are in healthcare facilities.  It is common for many people to interact with each patient.  One person at reception, then another person to perform intake procedures (weight/blood pressure), separate nurses that perform separate functions for patients, each going in and out of patients rooms to give the care they are assigned to do.  This coordinated orchestration does help give state-of-the-art care to patients, but also can lead to a much greater chance of contagious particles being spread throughout the facility.  This goes for both patients and healthcare workers.

With these exaggerated risks, properly cleaning healthcare facilities is of the utmost importance.  Healthcare Associated Infections (HAIs) are a very real concern and one of the best ways to combat HAIs is with proper cleaning practices.  These include but are not limited to:

    • 1)   Standard Precautions
    • a.     For more information check out https://www.cdc.gov/infectioncontrol/basics/standard-precautions.html
    • 2)   Proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) practices
    • a.     For more information check out https://www.osha.gov/personal-protective-equipment
    • 3)   Contact Precautions
    • a.     For a simple yet effective sign that can be placed on doors within healthcare facilities, please check out https://www.cdc.gov/infectioncontrol/pdf/contact-precautions-sign-P.pdf

If you are looking for a cleaning company that has undergone extensive training on the best practices for cleaning healthcare facilities, a great resource is the IJCSA Janitorial Service Directory.  It can be found at https://www.ijcsa.org/Janitorial-Service-Directory-Find-A-Janitorial-Service-JanitorialServices

From the nightly janitor to the national operations manager of any janitorial company, understanding bloodborne pathogens is important.  It can literally make the difference between life and death.  This is because the infections and diseases that can come into play can be fatal.  Having a plan to prevent exposures in the first place, as well as respond accordingly when exposures do occur is a must.

A good start to preventing exposures in the first place is to practice Universal Precautions.  This basically means treating any material that could be infectious as if it is contaminated with infectious materials.  Keeping this in mind when encountering possibly infectious materials and wearing the proper PPE are good steps to preventing exposure.

On the other hand, when an exposure does occur, it is important to have the right systems in place to respond in the best way possible to mitigate the risks that come with exposure.  When someone has been exposed, knowing to promptly contact their supervisor, physician, and pay attention to their health will help treat an infection if one occurs.  Thus, it is not just the employees who are doing the actual cleaning who need to know about bloodborne pathogens, but the cleaning company staff as well.

SAFETY FIRST should be the operational theme of any cleaning company charged with the janitorial duties for any given facility. Safety of the janitorial employees, the facility employees, and any clients, visitors, vendors, etc., who may enter the facility.

The understanding and handling of all solutions and chemicals used in the performance of a janitors' duties is an utmost prerequisite in workplace safety. Employees must become familiar with Safety Data Sheets, the information found thereon, and cautionary statements attributed to each product. Making SDS information readily available and providing training can ensure that employees comply with these regulations.

The handling of the possibly dangerous chemicals and substances found in the workplace is crucial and must be taken seriously by facility management, janitorial company management, and janitorial employees.
