In today's cleaning industry it is very imperative to have a comprehensive understanding of bloodborne pathogens, what they are, and the role they'll play in your operations. Whether is be for residential or commercial use, the presence of bloodborne pathogens imminent, making it very important to have an understanding of how to prevent the contraction and spread of diseases such as HIV and HBV, and what should you do in the event of possible exposure

Education about bloodborne pathogens for employees is easily and readily accessible by employers when requested. Nonetheless there are many resources available to anyone in regards to bloodborne pathogens. Understanding what they are and how they could potentially effect you is critical to your own health. Diseases such as HIV/AIDs and HBV can very easily be transmitted without the proper knowledge of preventative maintenance making it very important to be vigilant in your practices at work and while cleaning/sanitizing yourself and contaminated areas. While some vaccines may be available it is still important to treat all situations as hazardous so not to spread infection.

Once educated on them the next step in limiting spread of bloodborne pathogen is implementing knowledge and cleanliness. This goes for the employees and their surrounding work areas. It is very important employees be sure to follow all guidelines when it comes to disinfecting either themselves or work areas that have been contaminated. There have been many guidelines and practices implemented that can help you keep a clean and safe work environment such as Universal Precautions and Protective Practices. Employees should also have a good understanding of what procedures to be using in the event of exposure and then the proper disposal of all infected material. Understanding and following these guidelines is crucial to keeping a safe and clean work environment.

Cleaning employees and staff of any facility should have a very good knowledge about blood born pathogens to protect themselves and others from any infections or diseases that might be caught. These people likely deal with BBP's on a daily basis and that is why this knowledge is so important. BBP's are infectious microorganisms that can cause serious diseases like HIV.

One of the ways to protect yourself from BBP's is with proper PPE. PPE is personal protective equipment like gloves and face masks. Making sure to wash your hands often is another way to protect yourself and others from BBP's.

In conclusion, training is so important for cleaning employees and staff to make sure that nobody gets sick from BBP's. This knowledge is a requirement of OSHA as well. OSHA is the Occupational Safety and Health administration. Together, we can ensure the health and well-being of all our cleaning employees and staff!

In today's world, cleanliness is much more than orderly magazines in the waiting room or visible vacuum lines on carpet.  It is as essential part of our society's ability to live their lives.  Things we used to take from granted; eating out, attending a Dr appointment, attending a board meeting at the office, are now all dependent on keeping people healthy

Tackling residential and commercial cleaning from a medical approach will help in reducing spread of infection.  Adhering to systematic processes designed to prevent the spread of germs and ensure these pathogens are actually eliminated is critical.

We can learn from medical or terminal cleaning by:

-Using chemicals with the proper dwell time

-Cleaning kitchens, restrooms, offices in the correct sequence

    -Frequently cleaning high touch surfaces

    -Using PPE

Medical cleaning, often referred to as healthcare cleaning, goes far beyond standard janitorial practices. It involves strict protocols, use of EPA-registered disinfectants, and meticulous attention to detail to reduce the risk of infection and cross-contamination in healthcare environments. However, the same principles can—and should—be adapted to other cleaning scenarios in both residential and commercial settings. By incorporating key elements of hospital-grade disinfection and infection control into everyday cleaning routines, we can significantly reduce the spread of bacteria, viruses, and other harmful pathogens in homes, schools, offices, and public spaces.

One of the most impactful ways to bring medical cleaning into other environments is through the use of color-coded cleaning systems, which prevent cross-contamination between different areas (e.g., restrooms vs. kitchens). Similarly, adopting a structured cleaning protocol—such as cleaning from cleaner to dirtier areas and high to low—can improve sanitation outcomes in commercial properties like gyms, restaurants, and retail outlets. The use of personal protective equipment (PPE) by cleaning staff, combined with consistent hand hygiene, also mirrors best practices in healthcare and greatly reduces the risk of germ transmission. These procedures, while standard in hospitals, are not yet widespread in many non-medical settings—though their benefits are universal.

Adopting medical cleaning practices in residential settings is also essential, especially in homes with young children, elderly individuals, or immunocompromised residents. Simple steps like routine disinfection of high-touch surfaces (light switches, remote controls, door handles) and using microfiber cloths instead of sponges can make a significant difference. With the growing threats of antimicrobial resistance and new viral outbreaks, implementing these elevated standards of hygiene contributes to public health protection on a broader scale. Not only does this reduce absenteeism in workplaces and schools, but it also plays a role in preventing the spread of community-acquired infections.

For those seeking professional help in elevating their cleaning protocols, the IJCSA Janitorial Service Directory is a valuable resource. It connects homeowners and businesses with certified cleaning companies trained in medical office cleaning, terminal cleaning, and advanced disinfection techniques. By choosing service providers who understand healthcare-level sanitation, you’re not just cleaning your space—you’re actively contributing to the health and safety of your community and the environment. With the right knowledge and support, implementing medical cleaning practices into everyday cleaning can be both practical and powerful.

Bloodborne Pathogen education is very important. Proper training and materials can prevent the spread of infection diseases. The most common are HIV and Hep B. Some examples of proper cleaning and protocols include; Not compressing trash, you could get stuck by a needle. Using proper cleaner and sanitation for cleanup. Communicating potential exposure to your supervisor ASAP.

You should always wear PPE while performing cleaning services for BBP. It is important to protect yourself and others. BBP can be spread through contact with mucus membranes, breaks in the skin, and fluid, such as saliva. There are universal precautions that must be taken.

Be aware of symptoms after potential exposure. Symptoms of HBV include jaundice, diarrhea, and weight loss. Symptoms for HIV include night sweats, flu like symptoms, and loss of appetite. Your employer should offer HBV vaccination.
