    Sulfuric stench clears Petaluma Target

Firefighters responded around 9:50 a.m. to a report of an employee having a medical problem at the store at 401 Kenilworth Drive, Petaluma fire Capt. and Acting Battalion Chief Jude Prokop said.

Additional ambulances and fire personnel responded after a 911 dispatcher was told there was a sulfur-type odor in a storage room and more employees needed assistance, Prokop said.

Fire crews evacuated the store and set up a field treatment area for patients.

The store was closed while fire crews investigated the cause of the smell, Prokop said.

The odor was traced to a janitorial area in the rear storage area and the fire department’s hazardous materials team checked the area with gas monitors.

The odor was found to be coming from a malfunctioning sewer drain, Prokop said.

Fithy buildings. Principals overseeing cleaning or hiring extra help out of pocket. Teachers scrambling to clean classrooms in time for the first days of school. Reports of missing, broken and misplaced equipment. Mouse poop.

That’s what many Chicago Public School principals say resulted after CPS privatized janitorial services in the schools to the tune of $340 million, and neither CPS nor Aramark have fixed the problems even after being informed of the situation.

    UPDATE:
CPS to lay off 476 custodians

Some 226 principals (CPS operates 516 schools) responded to a survey taken by AAPPLE, a new activist group under the Chicago Principals and Administrators Association. The Aramark contract is the first issue the group is tackling, calling now on the Board of Education to rescind its $240 million contract with Aramark if the facilities giant can’t maintain “ordinary tidiness” standards known in the industry as APPA Level 2.

A woman who died after falling from a ladder while cleaning the gutters on her bungalow had to wait 35 minutes for an ambulance, an inquest heard.

Celia Farrell, 65, died at Connolly Hospital, Blanchardstown, on August 4 last year, two days after sustaining severe head injuries when she fell backwards off a ladder at her home at The Mayne, Clonee in Co Meath.

Dublin Coroner’s Court heard that Mrs Farrell had been due to celebrate her wedding anniversary that evening with her husband Noel Farrell.

He told the inquest that they had gone to 10am Mass that morning and afterwards he was cutting the grass while his wife started to clean the gutters on the bungalow.

He said he had asked her to wait because he wasn’t happy with the ladder she was using and they were in “no hurry”. However, when he went to help her at around 1.45pm, he found her lying on the ground with the ladder beside her.

He called for help from their next door neighbour Ann Finn, who is a nurse, and for an ambulance but had to ring again because it was taking so long to get there. Ms Finn said that when she arrived she put Mrs Farrell into the recovery position.

Would you try only water and a cloth to remove dirt and germs?

A growing number of cleaning products, many made of microfiber, are designed to clean surfaces including kitchen counters and bathroom sinks with only water.

Blogger Becky Rapinchuk, also known as the "Clean Mama," is a fan. She's been using natural cleaning products in her home for quite some time.

"For just every day wiping down the counters, cleaning surfaces, water and a microfiber cloth is sufficient," Rapinchuk said.

Research shows 37 percent of adults would be interested in using microfiber and water to clean dirt, grease and bacteria. About 12 percent already use microfiber on a daily basis, said John Owen, a senior household analyst for Mintel.

"People are increasingly equating a clean home with a healthy home and a healthy family. But at the same time there's also concern about the cleaning product ingredients. For these consumers, they still want their homes clean, but they're looking for alternatives," Owen said.

Dyson has unveiled a robot vacuum cleaner, which uses an advanced vision system to navigate rooms and can be controlled with a smartphone app.

Dyson has unveiled a robot vacuum cleaner, the 360 Eye, which navigates using a 360-degree vision system and can be programmed using an iPhone or Android smartphone.

Most existing robot vacuum cleaners rely on bumpers, which prevent them from bumping into walls and furniture by reversing or changing their path accordingly. Some newer models also have forward-looking infrared sensors to detect obstacles.

However, the Dyson 360 Eye vacuum has a 360-degree vision system that allows it to 'see' its environment and build a detailed floor plan to systematically navigate around a room and track its position.

Infrared sensors work in conjunction with a lens on the top of the machine that houses a 360-degree panoramic camera. The camera can see all around the room at once so the machine can accurately triangulate its position.

It Isn’t Just About the Planet

There are lots of things that professional cleaners can use to clean a place that don’t necessarily harm the environment. Some of those cleansers though are toxic to humans and animals and that presents a problem. To be a proper green company, the company needs to prove that it knows how to keep people just as safe as the planet. The last thing a company should do is say “we got it clean, but you can’t go in there or touch anything from there for a few days until the cleansers have settled in.”

    Beware Price Gouging

The food industry is famous for increasing its prices for foods that are certified organic. It’s no wonder that other companies would try the same thing. While it is true that “greening up” a business can cost money, beware of the company that insists on passing that cost along to the consumer (and don’t try to do that if the company is yours). There are a lot of great tax credits and grants available to companies who want to go green that can offset the cost of the upgrades.

For many, diving into a shark tank and spending hours every day among the deadly creatures would be a terrifying thought.

But for one man, spending up to seven hours a day swimming with more than 10 sharks is just part of his daily work schedule.

That's because Matt Martin, 35, is a professional shark tank cleaner at the Blue Planet Aquarium in Cheshire and heads up a team which takes more than 1,000 dives in the 3.4million litre tank every year.

    Lab, test, scientist

People can spend hours per week cleaning and tidying up their homes. However, according to a new study, no matter how much disinfectant people use, their homes will still be covered in bacteria. The bacteria, at least, mostly belong to the people who live in the house.

"We have so little information about where the microbes come from that shape our microbiome, whether it's for health or disease," said microbiologist Jack Gilbert of the Argonne National Laboratory and University of Chicago according to Philly. "It's the indoor environment. The best place to look at that was the home."
