Cleaning employees and staff should have sufficient knowledge about bloodborne pathogens to ensure that they do not put themselves and others at risk when handling. Bloodborne pathogens are pathogenic micro-organisms present in human blood that can cause disease to others if they come in contact. Having an understanding of how to handle items that may have been pre-exposed to blood or other body fluids can be a life or death situation, as such, care should be taken when handling these items to minimize or prevent infection.

Cleaning employees and staff should know how to clean up after a spill, change bed linens or dispose of items in a bin in a way that minimize their exposure to the risk. The Center for Disease Prevention and Control established “Universal Precaution” which states that blood and certain body fluids from patient be treated as potentially infectious and that the infection control precaution be taken to minimize the risk of exposure. This approach has been taken by OSHA in its Bloodborne Standard.

The best defence is an offense. Hence, having knowledge of how to do what needs to be done is critical. Always follow Universal Precaution; follow proper protection and cleanup plan. In addition, bags or containers should be properly labelled and colour-coded red or orange. Wear the appropriate protective gear or PPE. Cleanup well by disinfecting the exposed areas. Being trained in knowing what to do is essential in performing the task safely and effectively.

Bloodborne pathogens are an inherent occupational hazard for cleaning employees that pose a health risk if they are not prepared to work in environments with exposure to them. A pathogen is a disease-causing microorganism therefore a blood borne pathogen as such is a type found in human blood. HIV and HPV are examples of bloodborne pathogens. It is imperative for cleaning company employees to learn about working in environments with exposure to blood borne pathogens in order to minimize risk of infection while properly cleaning contaminated areas.

Furthermore, referring to your company’s exposure control plan when working in contaminated environments plays a vital role in handling contaminated material.

Protective practices such as proper use and disposal of proper protective equipment, disposal of contaminated objects, cleaning and disinfecting contaminated areas to simply properly washing your hands are a few examples of steps vital to working in and properly treating contaminated areas.

In the event that a cleaning employee suspects they may have been exposed or infected they should quickly contact their supervisor so the proper exposure protocols put into action

Cleaning employees along with anyone wanting to learn more about working in environments exposed to bloodborne pathogens should review the Blood Borne Pathogen Standard for the Workplace and can get additional information at www.osha.gov.

I am in the automotive reconditioning field.  I feel it is very important to implement a mold cleaning program and operation in my business.  We deal with all aspects of a vehicle, cleaning, body work, mechanical.  Meaning we are inside and outside a vehicle all day long.  Not only can mold grow in houses it can grow in or even on your car.

Now a days we spend a lot of time in vehicles.  Just as much as inside a house.  What if you had mold growing in a confined space.  I think that this is even more hazardous.  Implementing this into my business would help keep everyone safe and also generate more revenue service for my company.
