Importance of Safety around Blood

16 Jul 2026 4:08 PM | Kenneth Geerts

Working around blood and other potentially infectious materials requires constant attention to safety because they may contain bloodborne pathogens that can cause serious illness. Bloodborne pathogens are microorganisms, such as viruses and bacteria, that are transmitted through contact with infected blood or certain body fluids. Some of the most well-known bloodborne pathogens include hepatitis B (HBV), hepatitis C (HCV), and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Although the risk of exposure may be low when proper precautions are followed, every blood spill should be treated as potentially infectious to protect both employees and the people they serve.

The most effective way to prevent exposure is by following Standard Precautions, which assume that all blood and certain body fluids are potentially infectious. Employees should always wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), such as disposable gloves, and use additional protection like eye protection or gowns when there is a risk of splashing. Hands should be washed thoroughly after removing gloves, and contaminated materials should be disposed of in designated biohazard containers. Any cuts or broken skin should be covered before beginning work, and employees should never handle sharps or contaminated materials without proper training and equipment.

If an exposure incident occurs, it is important to respond immediately. The affected area should be washed with soap and water, or flushed with clean water if the eyes or other mucous membranes are involved. The incident should then be reported to a supervisor as soon as possible so that the appropriate medical evaluation and follow-up procedures can begin. Prompt reporting not only helps protect the exposed employee but also ensures compliance with workplace safety regulations and helps prevent future incidents through proper investigation and corrective action.
