The Industry Standards for Dealing with Bloodborne Pathogens

Bloodborne pathogens are microorganisms present in human blood and other bodily fluids that can cause diseases if transmitted to another person. In a variety of work environments, especially those in janitorial services, employees and staff may come into contact with blood or other potentially infectious materials. It is crucial for cleaning employees and staff to have proper training in bloodborne pathogens to ensure their safety and the safety of others. Equipping them with the proper knowledge to implement proper precautions, use personal protective equipment (PPE) effectively, and follow established protocols for handling potentially contaminated materials is an owner's responsibility.

The potential risk to janitorial staff is one of the primary reasons why cleaning employees and staff need to be knowledgeable about bloodborne pathogens in their line of work. Whether cleaning medical facilities, and public spaces or handling waste, there is a possibility of encountering blood or bodily fluids. Awareness of bloodborne pathogens allows employees to identify potential hazards, take appropriate precautions, and use the necessary protective measures to minimize the risk of exposure.

Certification is not only recommended it is mandated by Government agencies, such as the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) in the United States and Canada. Adhering to these guidelines is necessary to keep everyone safe when cleaning anywhere that there is the potential for exposure to bloodborne pathogens. In the event of an accident or exposure, knowing the proper response to the situation ensures employees can help mitigate the potential spread of infections and protect both themselves and those they work for.
