Cleaning employee and staff play an important role in preventing the spread of bloodborne pathogens. Bloodborne pathogens are the microorganisms that can cause serious infections or illness when a person is exposed to infected blood or infected material. Common bloodborne pathogens include human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) , hepatitis B virus and hepatitis C virus. The staff that works in hospitals, nursing homes and schools should have an understanding of these pathogens to maintain a safe workplace environment as they are more prone to accidently come in contact with these pathogens.

Cleaning employee and other service staff are responsible for cleaning where blood or other infectious material are present like  changing soiled bedsheets, patient room, treatment areas, bathroom and floors. therefore, their proper training is very important , they should be aware of universal protocols for disinfecting and cleaning these areas. Staff should know how to use personal protective equipment (PPE) in correct order. It is important that they understand the proper protocol for disinfection , hand hygiene and safe disposal procedure.

Training the employees about how to handle the contaminated items , blood and sharp objects helps in preventing the spread of bloodborne pathogens. Employees should know what to do if they come in contact with any exposure such as broken skin or needlestick or any other injury. They should immediately get medical check up and make an exposure report. If employees and staff have proper training about recognizing pathogens and how to use proper universal protocols and how to report any exposure incident, it can greatly be helpful in maintaining safe workplace environment.
