Terrie Eddy has been a janitor at Sherwin Williams’ headquarters in downtown Cleveland for 16 years. But in 10 days, she will be out of a job.

“It was really shocking,” Eddy said. “My heart stopped beating.”

Eddy is among roughly 30 union janitorial workers who received notice on December 30 that the paint company would be dropping union service members in favor of non-union janitors.

“It’s not just 30 workers, it is 30 human beings that have rent to pay, and children to take care of, and groceries to buy and car notes and mortgages. just like you do,” said Yanela Sims, director of Ohio SEIU Local 1, the union that represents the workers.

An old commercial for a bathroom cleaner has gone viral again for its disturbing and, according to some critics, sexist content. 

In 2009, Method — a company that prides itself in making "planet-friendly" cleaning products — released an advertisement promoting Shiny Suds, a bathroom cleaner. The video, which is just over a minute long, begins with a woman greeting a group of animated suds. The commercial then cuts to a scene in which the woman walks into a bathroom and undresses. She opens the shower curtains and appears visibly shocked as a number of suds greet her.

The protest signs read “Could you live on $8.46 cents?”

About 24 janitors, mostly women, marched and held up brooms in front of  Miami’s tallest office tower — the Southeast Financial Center in the heart of downtown. 

Most large office buildings outsource their janitorial services to cleaning companies. Those companies often hire contract workers. Compared to other parts of the state, South Florida’s contracted office cleaners earn among the lowest wages and there's a new push to unionize this workforce. 

Commercial janitors  in Miami-Dade  are predominantly immigrant women from across Latin America and the Caribbean. They typically earn less than $9 an hour.
