Atlanta — Prompted by available data and studies that show the risk of contracting COVID-19 via contact with surfaces is low, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is relaxing its exposure-prevention guidance on cleaning and disinfecting.

Act Now! Wear a mask. Stay 6 feet apart. Avoid crowds.

Cleaning and disinfecting has been a key element of CDC guidance during the pandemic. Now, in a science brief issued April 5 and based on available epidemiological data and studies of environmental transmission factors, the agency says, “Surface transmission is not the main route by which SARS-CoV-2 (the coronavirus that causes COVID-19) spreads.” Instead, the highest risk of transmission is via exposure to respiratory droplets carrying the virus.

CDC adds: “Cleaning surfaces using soap or detergent, and not disinfecting, is enough to reduce risk.” However, disinfection is still recommended in indoor work environments where a suspected or confirmed case of COVID-19 was present within the past 24 hours.

Life is messy. And come springtime, many of us know we should be sweeping, washing, and scrubbing our way toward a fresher home. But that doesn’t mean it’s easy, of course. According to a new survey conducted by the Consumer Insights team at Living Spaces, it’s what people would rather do than clean is especially interesting.

Does the sound of a dentist’s drill make you cringe? According to the survey of 464 people, 35 percent of respondents would choose a trip to the dentist for a teeth cleaning over partaking in spring cleaning. Other things people would rather do over scrubbing their home ’til the cows come home? 27 percent said they’d rather wake up early and run a mile for an entire week, while 26 percent said they’d rather give up alcohol for a month. Just under 20 percent said they’d rather give up Netflix for a month, while 15 percent said they’d even give up coffee for a month if it meant they didn’t have to clean.

A top epidemiologist who has advised President Joe Biden on the COVID-19 pandemic says it’s time Americans accept that the country is starting to enter a fourth surge of the coronavirus. Michael Osterholm, director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota, said that as far as the world is concerned “we really are in a category five hurricane status” and the next few weeks will see a surge in cases around the world. And the reality will start to become evident to Americans soon. “In terms of the United States, we’re just at the beginning of this surge,” Osterholm said on NBC’s Meet the Press. “We haven’t even really begun to see it yet.”

Tourists emjoy downtown Savannah, Georgia on March 3, 2021 during Spring break amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

Previous surges have followed a familiar pattern across the country and that now appears to be repeating. “We’re now I think in that cycle where the Upper Midwest is just now beginning to start this fourth surge,” he said. When Michigan reported 8,400 new cases yesterday “it was a wake up call to everyone,” particularly because of the rising number of severe cases for people who are between 30 and 50.

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) - The pandemic drove people to use more cleaning products and hand sanitizer in 2020 in an effort to stay healthy and safe. Unsurprisingly, in that same time frame, there was an increase in poison exposures to cleaning products in North Carolina.

North Carolina Poison Control (NCPC) reported 7,000 cases of exposure to cleaning products in 2020 — a 23% increase from the previous year.

However, one expert with NCPC can’t say for sure whether that increase in exposure was a direct result of the pandemic.

“Our main focus is managing the exposure, accessing and seeing if any treatment needs to be done,” said Dr. Anna Dulaney, a clinical toxicologist with NCPC. “We did see an increase. Now, whether or not that was actually related to the pandemic, we didn’t do that type or research so I can’t say for sure.”

Dr. Dulaney also says there was a shift in the types of substances they were called about for child exposure cases.

Hundreds of people rallied with the Service Employees International Union Local 87, on California Street to protest for their union contract.

On Monday, Local 87 teamed up with hundreds of union members in San Francisco to protest related companies for their union contract. After the speeches of Local 87 leaders, they began to march with union members in downtown San Francisco and shouted for a better union contract.

“We were here because we have to fight for our contract,” Ming said. “ We need to fight for healthcare, better wages, more safety, PPE (Personal Protective Equipment). That’s something that we have to fight for.”
