Due to the potential exposure to Bloodborne Pathogens, all companies should require training to prevent possible introduction of pathogens to their workforce. This is vitally important in the medical janitorial field.

Employees should understand the risks that pathogens pose. This risk and prevention must be understood by the employer, and employee to not only keep each other safe, but goes further to the ripple effect of the families of all parties involved.

Proper training will help to prevent potential exposure to bloodborne pathogens. With this training employees should be able to properly handle, and dispose  contaminated items. Without this type of training the company, employee, as well as immediate families can be at risk.

There are a number of institutions, associations and organizations offering certifications in Green Cleaning. IJCSA Green Cleaning Certification is the most affordable today and provides its Members with the most current exposure and training on safe green practices, guidelines, and regulations.

In certain parts of the world, particularly first world countries, yearly green certification is required. This is why IJCSA ensures Members are thoroughly trained in all current aspects of natural safe eco-friendly and green cleaning procedures.

Some of the benefits for members are as follows:

Members can turn in a green cleaning certificate with their cleaning proposals to insure they meet the standards of current green cleaning certification program, so their business remains certified.

Businesses get a boost in sales and services when are certified and the reputation of the company triples as a result.

The business or individual increases their chances of landing lucrative contracts because customers like to know the contractor is knowledgeable in the field.

Particularly for me in the Caribbean, it gives me the added opportunity to be considered as “an authority” in green cleaning and other certification and places my company as one that can guide the way forward to see the government of Trinidad and Tobago table legislation to make it mandatory for cleaning companies now considered front-line and essential to be green certified. Who knows, because of my certification, I could possibly be a trainer or advocate for IJCSA in my country.

Green Cleaning Certification comes with a sense of pride, integrity, validity, accreditation and authority on the subject matter. But more importantly training in green certification protects both the population and the world from dangerous chemicals. Because understanding the impacts of hazardous chemicals and their long-term effects to green earth is needed today. There are thousands of harmful chemicals on the market. While the owners of manufactures continue to make millions, lives are lost to sicknesses associated with these harmful chemicals. Considering that these chemicals are not biodegradable, they take years before they can be broken down. The burden are upon those of us that are certified to sound the alarm and demand the-right-to-know what are in these chemicals and why they should be discontinued.

Janitorial staff is imperative to any business to promote morale and pride in a business. Whether it is housekeeping in a home, medical facility, nursing home or daycare, information regarding blood borne pathogens is a necessity.  Knowledge of bloodborne pathogens is pivotal to everyone's role in being safe while completing daily tasks.

An employer is responsible in ensuring employees are trained for their own protection while employees fulfill their role for his or her company. It is vital to know about the hazards of blood borne pathogens to prevent exposure and how to address post exposure to prevent risk of infection and/or disease. The threat of exposure can occur at any time.

When employees understand the seriousness of using the knowledge obtained and the personal consequences if ignored, this will assist with everyone being proactive. In addition, this knowledge should also encourage employees to use personal protective equipment appropriately at all times.

Bloodborne pathogens are pathogenic microorganisms that are present in human blood, and can cause disease in humans. Cleaning professionals can be exposed to these pathogens while performing basic duties such as trash removal, handling laundry, or cleaning up after a sick person. Taking proper precautions when performing such duties can prevent serious illness, or even death.

Being exposed to bloodborne pathogens leaves cleaning professionals, and others, at risk of contracting lifelong diseases. Any person facing potential exposure should be aware of the hazards and risks, in addition to knowing and applying proper precautions to avoid contracting disease. Most occupational exposure occurs when the pathogens come in contact with mucous membranes. Knowing this and the precautions that should be taken to avoid exposure when cleaning can save lives.

Some precautions that should be taken to reduce, or even eliminate, the potential of contracting diseases such as HIV or HBV include: wearing gloves and eye protection, being careful not to compress bags when removing trash, and being careful to clean up and dispose of fluids and contaminates in a way that will not cause any splashing or spattering. It is also very important to follow the universal precaution recommending that blood and certain other bodily fluids be considered potentially infectious, and that infection control precautions be taken to minimize the risk of exposure.

An effective way to reduce or eliminate contracting disease from blood bornepathogens is by teaching cleaning professionals, and others who may encounter blood or other bodily fluids about precautions that can and should be taken for their own safety, as well as those around them.
