Bloodborne pathogen training is important in cleaning service staff and employees because you never know what you may com into contact with while you are on the job site. If you are not properly trained even the smallest accident can have the biggest consequences.

Everyone that is going to work at a location where they may come into contact with blood whether it be needles or garbage or blood soaked linen are at risk. You must always wear protective PPE for the job that you are doing at hand. If you are exposed to blood let you supervisor know right away so they can take further action and send you to get tested. Even if there is no risk of infection better to be safe then sorry

Always remember never recap a needle. Do not try to compact the trash manually by standing in the trash and jumping up and down or pushing down with your hands. If you any open wounds be sure to flush the wound and then report to your supervisor so that the right steps can be taken and reported.

Bloodborne Pathogen training is important as it will properly prepare affected workplace individuals for needed procedures and equipment when performing work.  It is also important to protect those around them while they perform their cleaning tasks.  The pathogens of concern include but are not limited to HIV, Hepatitis C, Hepatitis B among others.  Bloodborne pathogens can be transmitted when body fluid(blood,Saliva, etc...) come in contact with an unprotected person.

Proper Protective equipment use is critical for protecting individuals from exposure to BBPs.  Such equipment includes gloves(latex or nitrile), gowns, masks, eye protection and face shields.  Following Universal Precautions is the approach by which all human body fluids are treated as if they are known to be infected with BBPs. By using universal precautions, when handling or cleaning items or surfaces, potential exposure is minimizes.

Finally, exercising good hygiene is key to minimizing the potential hazards when dealing with BBPs. Properly washing hands before and after potential exposure as well as throughout the day is critical.  Keeping the work area clean and free from debris will provide additional safeguards from transmission.  Training all employees in the workplace these key elements will greatly decrease potential transmission of BBPs

Cleaning employees are essential, and perhaps more recognized now than ever before. However, that recognition comes with great responsibility. To deliver a complete service that decontaminates and at the same time ensures the safety of the staff and the ones at the facilities, it is imperative that staff is trained and that they understand the risks of not knowing. Cleaning employees, including management and the ones doing the work must understand bloodborne pathogens and how to reduce exposure.

Staff must be trained and understand protocols that will minimize any risk of infection, contamination and injuries come to an extreme high risk and not understanding it becomes a liability for the involved. OSHA provides the knowledge needed to stay safe and complete the job that follows the prescribed standards. This knowledge more than ever, is the key to contain spread of viruses and cleaning employees are in the front lines to reduce the spread.

Training staff and establishing protocols will ensure that people are safe and that the injuries reduce in the workplace. These protocols also make people accountable, it is hard or almost impossible to do a good job when there is no knowledge. People need to know what they are supposed to do and how to do it properly in order to stay safe. We must understand that our world has forever changed due to our new environmental challenges and the new awareness of contamination by people everywhere. Us, as the cleaning industry have a major responsibility to abide by these standards and keep contamination controlled.
