Bloodborne pathogens guidelines have been created to reduce and eliminate the risks of transmitting infectious diseases through the blood or body fluids of other individuals. The most common diseases to contract when in contact with these fluids are HBV and HIV (associated with AIDS). That is why it is recommended for cleaning workers to follow the universal precautionary protocol, which was originally created by The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, for which OSHA created a Bloodborne Standard. It was initially created for health workers and hospital workers, but it was expanded for all those occupations that are reasonably exposed to blood or other infectious materials such as cleaning workers in general. Without them, risks of these pathogens infecting others would be higher.

Proper cleaning reduces risk of the diseases previously mentioned. Therefore, it is extremely important for cleaning workers to have knowledge of these guidelines in order to apply them correctly during the cleaning of any fluid, thus avoiding contracting any disease and avoid spreading it to others. This is achieved by applying the universal protocol of precaution. The use of adequate equipment, for instance gloves and glasses since these diseases are spread through the mucous membranes is significant. The management of areas or objects that have been in contact with these fluids contribute to the spread and shall be thoroughly cleaned by cleaning employees with proper knowledge using the disinfectants indicated to prevent the spread and dispose of all the aforementioned. It should be noted that it is important for the workers to know to notify the supervisor on duty if there are any suspicions of any type of contact with these fluids which could lead to getting infected.  The worker should visit a healthcare provider and be on the lookout for any symptoms of HBV or HIV. Many of these symptoms appear after a few years of getting infected. For this reason, OSHA recommends keeping records for three years.

In conclusion, we, as cleaning professionals must have knowledge of the universal protocol created by The Centers for Disease Control  and Prevention, and the OSHA Bloodborne Standard  guidelines in order to maintain a high standard when we do our work because it’s the safest way to protect ourselves. The precaution that is taken cause workers to avoid serious illnesses and even death. Therefore, it is very important that the staff who work for a cleaning company have adequate training and knowledge on bloodborne pathogens to comply with all safety guidelines in order to avoid transmission of diseases because safety is our priority.

Proper cleaning of healthcare facilities is imperative to keeping patients, staff, and visitors free of infection from harmful diseases.  Healthcare facilities are filled with all types of germs naturally because of the patients that are there for treatment, and the processes that are necessary to heal these infections.  Subsequently, those who clean these facilities will inevitably come in contact with these germs, so it is necessary to know how to properly disinfect the facilities.

Employees who clean healthcare facilities properly are not only doing so for their own safety, but for those around them as well.  As previously stated, healthcare facilities are hubs for germs and infectious diseases.  If these germs are not properly disinfected then a situation could occur where a lot of people get sick due to negligence.  This could result in hefty lawsuits which all could have been avoided if the facility had been properly disinfected.

This is why the correct guidelines must be followed by employees who clean these facilities.  MSDS's must be used to properly deal with any hazardous chemicals.  PPE must be used to keep staff from bringing any germs home.  Lastly, the proper techniques of wiping down surfaces and restrooms will keep everyone safe and the buildings clean.

The benefits of having your carpet cleaned are not just limited to having it look better.  Carpet cleaning when done correctly and with the right products can not only bring out the beauty of your carpet but can also help in getting rid of stains, allergens, old smells and dirt.  We walk on our carpets everyday but often give it little thought in the cleaning process other than the regular vacuuming.

Having your carpet cleaned regularly either yearly or every six months, can extend the life of your carpet.  Having an individual who is certified in carpet cleaning helps to ensure that proper products and procedures are done during the process.  Having an unqualified individual clean your carpet could spell disaster for your carpet and expensive costs to either have the carpet cleaned correctly or replaced.

Medical cleaning employees and staff should educate themselves on prevention of contamination of bloodborne pathogens. Some ways to stay knowledgeable of preventative methods are by reading the CDC website, OSHA's Bloodborne Pathogen Standard (29 CFR 1910.1030), as well as the Company's Cleaning Policy and Procedure.

Some bloodborne pathogens consist of, but are not limited to HIV (Human Immunodifficiency Virus), HBV (Hepatitis B Virus), & HCV (Hepatitis C Virus). These are the most common bloodborne pathogens in which can become deadly once exposed. The reason being is there is no cure, however there is medicine that can contain the spread of the virus. Without proper treatment, these pathogens attack the immune system, ultimately causing organ failure. The CDC website is constantly updated with information on bloodborne pathogens and ways to prevent the spread of such pathogens. OSHA provides information and resources that overall are in place to help keep workers safe from exposure to bloodborne pathogens Employers form their cleaning & prevention policy and procedures based on OSHA's guidelines.

Remaining educated on ways to prevent exposure to bloodborne pathogens and other disease and infections can ultimately prevent the spread of disease. It is important to take care of your health and be mindful that just because you can't see it, doesn't mean it isn't there. It is also important to stay up to date with policies and procedures since they may change as new pathogens emerge.

Health Care facilities being properly cleaned is critical to staff and patients. Properly cleaning healthcare facilities are important because the U.S center for Disease Control and Prevention states that there are nearly 1.7 million cases of Health Care Associated Infections. 1/20 people who end up in the hospital will contract a health care associated infection.

Cleaning of health care facilities are mainly performed for medical reasons. There are at risk patients. The people who are responsible for properly cleaning healthcare facilities should practice proper hand hygiene. They should also be knowledgeable of proper cleaning and disinfecting techniques for the environment they work in. Education and training of those who work in a healthcare facility will increase compliance and will reduce the cases of HAIs. OSHA maintains strict cleaning standards for all healthcare facilities. When cleaning properly infections and even death can be prevented.
