“It was the best way we could control it,” commission Chairman Cedric Johnson said. The cleaning crew “will probably have more pride, knowing they work for the airport.”
The transition will take several months and contracted staff will have the opportunity to apply for the new jobs, Johnson said.
The program has a budget of approximately $300,000 for labor, equipment and supplies, airport Executive Director Herbert Judon said.

1. DON’T mix ammonia with bleach.
“The combination of these two cleaners could be lethal, so be very careful when mixing any cleaners that contain ammonia or bleach.”
2. DON’T scrub your carpets, but blot them instead.
“You could damage the carpet by scrubbing too hard, and a gentle blot will do the trick!”
3. DON’T wash windows in a circular motion.
“Instead, move the paper towels back and forth horizontally, and then vertically. Wiping in little circles is more likely to leave streaks. Speaking of washing windows, DON’T do it on a hot, sunny day. The heat will dry the cleaner too quickly, leaving streaks. It’s much easier to get clean windows on a cool day.”

Despite a drop in violent crime across the United States, the crime-scene cleanup industry has boomed. Profits for the nearly 600 firms in the United States totaled more than $99 million in 2015, on revenues of $357.5 million, according to IBISWorld, a market research group. But those profits are sometimes reaped from those who can ill afford costs that may run into the tens of thousands of dollars when insurers do not pay.

The city of Waco is considering replacing its janitorial staff with private contractors in an effort to save $294,000 a year.
City staff and three council members discussed privatizing the service at a budget and audit committee meeting Tuesday, three days before City Manager Dale Fisseler releases his preliminary budget for 2016-17.
If the council agrees, the city would bid out the janitorial services now performed by 22 full-time and three part-time employees, reducing janitorial costs from $950,000 to an estimated $656,000 a year. Current employees earn between $9.94 and $14.10 per hour, plus benefits for full-time workers.
City general services director Kelly Holecek told the council committee that a contractor could do the work with fewer employees and could eliminate the missed cleanings that occur when staff are sick.
Fisseler said the city already relies on contractors to clean the police headquarters at the Hillcrest Tower, and that arrangement has worked well.
Councilman Jim Holmes said outsourcing the service “makes sense.”
“With this savings, it’s almost a no-brainer,” Holmes said.

Workers packed into the crowded Logan International Airport in Boston on Wednesday, June 15, where SEIU Local 32BJ brought together a large swathe of minimum-wage employees who often go unseen to hurried travelers. Baggage handlers, cabin cleaning staff and others who go through contracting companies were rallying together under an organizing banner with a history of struggle dating back 30 years.
While the Fight for $15 raises headlines and wages across the United States, June 15 saw a national day of action in cities around the country for the annual anniversary of the Justice for Janitors campaign. For SEIU Local 32BJ, which handles 155,000 property service workers along the East Coast from New Hampshire to Florida, this was a chance to reclaim the history of a campaign that did the unthinkable in the early 1990s.
“It has become a symbol for how labor unions and workers, working together and exercising their power, can establish standards in all sorts of industries,” said Eugenio Villasante, regional communications manager for SEIU Local 32BJ.

City of Toronto cleaning services are flushing hundreds of thousands of dollars down the drain every year, according to auditor general Beverly Romeo-Beehler. Two audits of the cleaning services with Toronto’s facilities management department, and oversight of work done by contract cleaners, uncovered the costly waste. The city spent $30.5 million to clean 265 facilities last year, including $8.3 paid to contracted cleaners. The facilities have a total gross floor area of more than 10 million square feet.
