Trepidation soon gave way to excitement when Toru Koremura, president of a Tokyo-based cleaning company, took up the challenge of disinfecting the Diamond Princess — a cruise ship quarantined in the port of Yokohama that made global headlines earlier this year as a “petri dish” for the COVID-19 virus.

The 38-year-old cleaning specialist admits part of him was scared to delve into what was then considered one of the world’s biggest COVID-19 hotspots.

But in the end, what overcame his fear was the thought of what he and others tasked with decontaminating the vessel might be able to achieve: ridding the world of the notion that Japan was the source of the outbreak.

“With all eyes on the Diamond Princess, I remember that there was this narrative back then that Japan was somehow where the virus was originating — I saw media reports saying Japanese people were being discriminated against overseas and treated as if they were virus spreaders,” said Koremura, head of cleaning firm Riskbenefit Co., in a recent interview.

At the time, the world was also increasingly doubtful that the nation would be able to host the Summer Olympics.

3- Spraying disinfectant and wiping it up immediately

“Most household disinfectant holds a three- to 10-minute dwell time, which means the product needs to sit wet on a surface for it to actually disinfectant,” says Karina Neff, president and CEO of MaxiMaids. “Also note that it’s important to remove debris or dirt from the surface with a microfiber towel before disinfecting.”

Those are just two of the ways you’ve probably been using disinfectants wrong. To properly disinfect, wipe down the surface with your towel to remove soil, debris, and dirt, and then spray the surface with your disinfectant. Follow the label instructions for the product dwell time, then wipe up. Neff is a fan of Clorox Disinfecting Spray because it’s EPA tested and approved, as is Lysol, which is one of the few products that’s also been proven to kill coronavirus on surfaces.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention updated guidance on its website to say coronavirus can commonly spread "through respiratory droplets or small particles, such as those in aerosols," which are produced even when a person breathes.

"Airborne viruses, including COVID-19, are among the most contagious and easily spread," the site now says.

Previously, the CDC page said that COVID-19 was thought to spread mainly between people in close contact — about 6 feet — and "through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs, sneezes or talks."

The page, updated Friday, still says COVID-19 most commonly spreads between people who are in close contact with one another, and now says the virus is known to spread "through respiratory droplets or small particles, such as those in aerosols, produced when an infected person coughs, sneezes, sings, talks or breathes."

These particles can cause infection when "inhaled into the nose, mouth, airways, and lungs," it says. "This is thought to be the main way the virus spreads."

An employee sets up two large desk fans and uses them to regularly spray alcohol disinfectant in hopes of keeping her workspace free from Covid-19. However, the strong-smelling sanitizer triggers headaches in a nearby co-worker, who complains.

This dispute occurred between two employees at a Midwest accounting firm, according to Philippe Weiss, president of Seyfarth at Work, a consulting division of management-side law firm Seyfarth Shaw LLP.

The employer ultimately resolved the situation by separating the two employees and providing “low-aroma” cleaning kits to all its workers, Weiss said. But the fight over the fans shows the potential for litigation over pandemic return-to-work issues, he said.

“With allergies, sensitivities, and the general risks related to rising employee tempers, other employers facing a similar set of facts may not be as fortunate,” Weiss said.
