When it comes to cleaning, you never know what you will be potentially exposing yourself to. Each and every day you risk the chance of contracting some sort of virus or disease from things such as surfaces or linens. It is so important for cleaning staff to know about bloodborne pathogens to ensure they can protect not only themselves, but others as well. Many would not think the day to day of a cleaning company to be potentially dangerous, but if uneducated it could be.

When you have cleaning staff, educating them about bloodborne pathogens is just the start of keeping them safe. Many of the viruses or diseases that can be contracted while cleaning are life changing. They are untreatable; they can be fatal. It is something you would potentially have your entire life and could possibly make you very ill.

Cleaning surfaces and linens using proper PPE and proper disinfectants is so important. This is what will protect you and your cleaning staff from contracting these horrible viruses and diseases. Once you initially train your staff, you should continue to have classes to remind them of proper cleaning methods and using proper PPE.

It has never been more obvious than now, with the current pandemic situation, that we cannot take for granted cleaning procedures or protocols. We must be vigilant in developing a thorough offensive plan. This plan must include a clear understanding of what a pathogen is and what is required to develop a defensive and strategic plan. This plan should outline clearly, proper practices, handling of areas and transportation of contaminated items.

The first step is understanding that pathogens are presented in human blood and that they can cause serious and deadly diseases in humans. Exposure to these pathogens happen when they come into contact with mucus membranes such as the nose, mouth, or open cuts or breaks in skin.  This exposure can occur from blood, vomit, and saliva. Diseases such as HBV, Hepititus, HIV can be contracted from such exposure. This is why, a Universal Precaution Approach must be seriously adhered to.

OSHA requires that the Universal Precautions should be clearly outlined and posted at each work site. It is imperative that it be followed. Should contamination occur specific documentation must be submitted. This also requires records to be kept for 3 years. If an employee is exposed, they must know that the first thing they should do is immediately report it to their supervisor and notify their physician.  The cleaning employee should be made aware of potential symptoms such as fatigue, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and light color stools.  Remember the Best Defense is a Thorough Offense.

Bloodborne pathogens are infectious microorganisms in human blood that can cause diease in humans. These pathogens include Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C and HIV.

In order to reduce or eleminate the hazards of occupatoinal exposure to bloodborn pathogens. An employer must implement an exposure control plan for the work site. The plan must describe how an employer will use engineering and work practice controls, personal protective clothing and equipment, employee training, vaccinations, and requirements by OSHA bloodborne pathogens standards.

It is important for employer and employee to know OSHA information on bloodborne pathogens and how to contain them. This information can save a life and keep pathogens from spreading or being able to enter people blood stream through the nose, mouth, mucus membrane, cuts or tears in the skin.

Most medical cleaning practices can be used in almost any other application. There are designated levels of cleaning and disinfecting that set a MINIMUM standard for different types of facilities and/or properties. Although a residential property may require a lower level of protection against infectious diseases in comparison to a medical facility, execution is just as important.

Most homes may not have much foot traffic or many visitors on a daily basis creating a lower level of risk. However, rental properties such as Air Bnb’s are becoming more and more popular throughout resulting in a much higher amount of people passing in and out of the homes at a much higher capacity regularly. This increases the risk of infection dramatically and increases the demand for a higher level of protection than normal.

Another example would be use of PPE. In a medical setting, the proper PPE is required always, while a residential or retail setting may not have the same requirements.

As good practice, it is recommended that items such as gloves and protective eyewear be worn during ANY cleaning or disinfecting to reduce risk of harm, infection, and/or cross-contamination.

We can all benefit from a work environment that concentrates on the health and safety of its employees and clients. Making sure that your company is properly educated, trained and supported through policies and procedures required or recommended by OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) can provide a safe workspace for your employees and offer them the confidence they need to provided quality services to your clients and that establish themselves in their careers.

OSHA requires that all employees in any industry that may come in contact with potentially infectious bloodborne pathogens (whether from blood or other bodily fluids) receive training and access to documentation, support and PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) as part of their employment. These standards are in place to protect your employees from becoming contaminated and exposed to potentially fatal diseases like HBV or HIV, as well as reduces the risk of spreading infected bloodborne pathogens to our loved ones and communities.

As employers, we should educate our employees of the risks and liabilities working in the spaces in which they are employed as well as their assigned tasks. If they are not properly trained, educated or cautioned, they unknowingly risk their lives in performing a service for our benefit. We must not be so careless or selfish. Cleaning companies should follow OSHA laws and provide the training and support essential to protecting our staff and ensuring a safe working envirnoment.
