Bloodborne pathogens are infectious microorganisms in blood that can cause diseases. These diseases can include HIV and HBV. The are spread when the pathogens come in contact with mucus membranes or breaks in the skin. Blood, saliva or vomit can all be contaminated; and employees are to assume all blood and bodily fluids are infected.

In order to reduce exposure, all employers are required by law to have a plan for employees to follow. Employees in the healthcare field are subject to the standard. Additionally, employees in the housekeeping field may be subject to the standard, including in laundry services, as they may be involved the cleanup of bodily fluids. Methods of compliance include: universal precautions, sharps disposal containers, hand hygiene, personal protective equipment; decontamination procedures and removal of regulated waste.

It is important that all employers and employees are educated and aware of the standards put in place by OSHA. It is a necessary step in limiting the spread of infectious disease and keeping all employees safe in the workplace
