BloodBorne Pathogens (THE IMPORTANCE OF KNOWING)

08 May 2020 10:20 PM | Anonymous

In the cleaning world there are many dangers that we face on a day to day basis, from environmental dangers like storms and blizzards to man-made like broken stairs and sidewalks. So safety plays a major part when it comes to cleaning and why not? We take time to make sure our areas are cleaned so why we can't stay safe and healthy while doing so. Most cleaners only think about those dangers if they think about any. What about the dangers we can not see like Asbestos and Viruses? These dangers are silent but deadly killers.

Here I will discuss one danger that is faced.. Bloodborne Pathogens (BBP), what the are and why ALL staff should be informed on how to deal with then.

First things first, What is a Bloodborne Pathogens (BBP)? Bloodborne Pathogens are microorganisms that are in the human blood and can cause diseases in humans. Some diseases that are transmitted are HBV ,HIV, HCV just for example. Now that we know what (BBP) are the part is to understand how they can spread .

Bloodborne pathogens are spread through bodily fluids like (for name sake) blood, vomit and in some cases saliva. The way these pathogens enter the body is when they come in contact with a mucus membrane like the eyes , nose or mouth. BBP may also enter the body through a puncture ,cut or scrape in the skin. Since there are many ways to contract a BBP the Universal Approach was developed by the CDC to help stop the spread.

If more people was aware of some the basic precautions when dealing with potential hazards it will be harder for these diseases to spread.

It is not only important for the cleaners to have the knowledge of how to deal with Bloodborne Pathogens but all staff since we all can come in contact with them and the more aware we are the safer we ALL can be.
