The importance of cleaning employee's knowledge on Bloodborne Pathogens

For a person that is not in a medical field it may be a common sense to conclude that it is important for all staff members at a medical facility to have some understanding about bloodborne pathogens. That point of view improves significantly once a person gets intentionally involved in the clinical environment like in my case trying to became a cleaning company for medical facilities. This process requit of me to educate myself about bloodborne pathogens and the importance of knowing about it if I am a healthcare employee.

After watching the OSHA Bloodborne Pathogen, it became clearer to me why it is important for the cleaning employees and staff to know about bloodborne pathogens and this are some of the reasons: To protect our self against the health hazards caused by bloodborne pathogens. That is why OSHA created safeguards standards for Bloodborne Pathogens. Also, as a worker with occupational exposure it is important to be trained in the use and limitations of methods that will prevent or reduce exposure, including appropriate engineering controls, work practices and personal protective equipment.

Following OSHA’s standards will prevent us with the needed education required to avoid contracting Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS), Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C or any other blood transmitted diseases. To reduce or eliminate the hazards of occupational exposure, an employer must implement an exposure control plan for the worksite with details on protection measures. Simple work practice controls such as hand washing can make a difference in preventing contamination by blood exposure.

As a professional cleaning company with a good understanding of Bloodborne Pathogen we will be more conscience about cleaning and decontaminating all work surfaces to reduce the chances of exposure to a bloodborne pathogen. My knowledge in this area will protect not just me but also my love ones.
