Importance of Cleaning Mold

13 Jun 2023 3:25 PM | Deleted user

Indoor outbreaks of mold can be unsightly and cause unpleasant odors, but this is far from the extent of the damage mold can do. Mold eats away at whatever material it grows on, potentially causing structural damage in buildings and/or destroying important items. Mold spores can also cause a variety of health problems when inhaled, and some mold species even produce toxins called mycotoxins.

Mold spores are present in the air both indoors and outdoors, and it is important to remember that, no matter how thoroughly one cleans, mold spores can never be completely eliminated. A few spores will inevitably slip through here and there, and if they land in conditions favorable to mold growth, they will grow into an outbreak. The most important thing when it comes to mold surviving and spreading is moisture. If enough moisture is present, other conditions such as light and temperature will merely determine which species of mold is capable of growing in an environment. The only practical way to make an environment inhospitable to mold is to eliminate excess moisture.

If preventative measures were not previously taken, or if unforeseen circumstances such as floods lead to mold outbreaks, it is necessary to properly clean away the mold as well as to remedy whatever conditions allowed it to grow. For very small outbreaks in places that can be easily seen and reached, such as small patches of visible mold on a few bathroom tiles, it may be possible for the homeowner or regular cleaner to deal with the problem on their own. For larger outbreaks, on the scale of entire rooms, it may be necessary to hire a professional mold remediation service. Professional services may also be necessary when the mold is partially or completely hidden. Whether cleanup is done by an amateur or by a professional, it must be done correctly. Incorrect cleanup procedures may spread the mold spores throughout the building, ultimately making the problem worse.

Cleaning and preventing mold outbreaks will not only keep a property looking and smelling much nicer. It will also prevent property damage and health problems for occupants.
