In the cleaning and janitorial industry, it is one of the most dangerous areas to combine two cleaning agents that are incompatible with each other. There is a possibility that many employees do not know that if some cleaning agents are combined, they will create a dangerous chemical reaction, which will release, toxic, gas, create harmful fumes, or cause Severe chemical burns.

for example, when an employee combines bleach with ammonia or an acid base cleaner, he/she creates a poisonous gas, which can affect the respiratory system, damage the lungs in an ultimately result in death. These types of chemical reactions usually occur very quickly.

therefore, employees have very little time to evacuate the area. Even though some cleaning agents may appear harmless when used alone, they may become extremely hazardous when combine. It is vital to understand that the compatibility of cleaning agents due to the fact that even though a simple error, such as combining cleaning agents in the same bucket or using a second cleaning agent right after the first cleaning agent without properly rinsing off the first cleaning agent can create a life-threatening situation. all janitorial employees must be aware of the potential risk associated with the chemical hazards to protect themselves, their fellow employees, their customers and the general public. Employee should always read the label of each product in the safety data sheets prior to using any unfamiliar cleaning agents. employee should also follow the directions provided by the manufacturer of each product employees must use the correct personal protective equipment. Employee should never combine cleaning products unless they have been instructed to do so by the manufacturer of the cleaning product. An employee who notices unusual fumes, strong odors, coughing, burning eyes, having difficulty breathing, should immediately exit the contaminated area and follow the companies emergency response plan. Chemical safety is not simply a company requirement, it is a responsibility that can prevent serious injury as well as long-term health problems, or even death. Understanding, chemical hazards in following safe handling practices daily, janitorial employees can assist in creating a safer workplace for all.

How You Can Implement Medical Cleaning Practices Into Residential & Commercial Cleaning

As the owner of Space Pearl Cleaning Service, I’ve learned that medical cleaning practices aren’t just valuable inside hospitals and clinics—they can dramatically improve the safety and hygiene of everyday residential and commercial environments. Healthcare facilities follow strict protocols because they deal with vulnerable populations and high‑risk pathogens. But the truth is that harmful bacteria, germs, and viruses exist everywhere: in homes, offices, schools, retail stores, and public buildings. By applying healthcare cleaning principles such as infection control, medical‑grade disinfection, and cross‑contamination prevention, we can elevate the level of protection in any space and create healthier environments for families, employees, and customers.

One of the most effective ways to integrate medical cleaning practices into non‑medical settings is by adopting high‑touch surface routines. In healthcare, surfaces like door handles, light switches, faucets, keyboards, and shared equipment are disinfected frequently because they are the fastest way germs spread. Implementing these same habits in residential and commercial cleaning helps reduce the transmission of viruses such as influenza, norovirus, and other common pathogens. Using EPA‑approved disinfectants, color‑coded microfiber systems, and proper dwell times—techniques borrowed from healthcare sanitation—ensures that cleaning is not only thorough but scientifically effective.

Another important practice is improving air quality and reducing biohazard risks. Healthcare environments rely on ventilation, HEPA filtration, and proper handling of contaminated materials to protect patients and staff. These strategies can also be applied in homes and workplaces to reduce allergens, airborne germs, and environmental contaminants. Encouraging routine disinfection, safe chemical usage, and proper cleaning of restrooms, kitchens, and shared spaces supports the broader mission of protecting the population from harmful microorganisms. When we adopt medical‑grade cleaning habits outside of healthcare facilities, we contribute to a healthier world—one home, one office, and one community at a time.

A cleaning service does more than make a space look clean. It enters a place where people live or work, so trust and respect matter from the first conversation. Great customer service means listening carefully, understanding what each client needs, arriving as agreed, and treating their space with care. IJCSA members put customers and clients first. Whether the job is cleaning a home, office, or other facility, customer service is a priority alongside the cleaning itself.

One simple lesson about customer service has stayed with me: when we greet a customer with a genuine smile, we often receive a smile in return. That moment can help someone feel comfortable welcoming us into their space. A smile alone is not enough, of course. We must follow it with clear communication, careful work, and a willingness to listen if something needs attention. When clients feel heard and respected, we can build the kind of trust that lasts beyond a single cleaning visit.

IJCSA members understand that every customer has different needs. Great service means asking questions, explaining what to expect, and taking pride in the details that matter to the client. If you are looking for a cleaning company that values both professional work and a positive customer experience, explore the IJCSA Business Directory (https://www.ijcsa.org/Find-A-Cleaning-Service-Janitorial-Service) to find a member who can help.

Cleaning employees and staff play a vital role in keeping the environment safe and healthy. Bloodborne pathogens are germs that can be found in human blood and other potentially infectious materials, and they can cause serious diseases. While doing their daily work, cleaning staff may come into contact with blood or contaminated surfaces. By understanding the risks of bloodborne pathogens, employees can spot potential hazards and take the right steps to protect themselves and those around them.
Proper training is important because employees need to know how to safely handle contaminated materials, waste, and surfaces. Employees should understand the importance of wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), practicing good hand hygiene, and following proper cleaning and disinfection procedures. They should also know that they should never reach into garbage with their hands or handle potentially contaminated sharp objects without proper precautions. Following these practices can help reduce the risk of accidental exposure and prevent the spread of infection.
Knowing about bloodborne pathogens also helps create a safer workplace for employees, residents, clients, and visitors. Employees should know what to do if an exposure occurs, including washing the affected area immediately, reporting the incident, and following their employer's exposure-control procedures. Regular education and training help cleaning staff remain aware of potential hazards and perform their responsibilities safely and professionally. Knowledge, proper procedures, PPE, and safe cleaning practices are essential for reducing the risk of bloodborne pathogen exposure.

Medical cleaning practices can be useful not only in healthcare facilities but also in residential and commercial cleaning situations. Homes, offices, businesses, schools, and other buildings can have germs, bacteria, viruses, and other contaminants. Proper cleaning and disinfection practices can help maintain a cleaner, healthier environment. Cleaning should not only make an area look clean but also reduce contamination and prevent the spread of germs.
One medical cleaning practice used in residential and commercial settings is paying close attention to high-touch surfaces. Clean door handles, light switches, handrails, countertops, bathroom fixtures, shared equipment, and other frequently touched surfaces regularly. Cleaning technicians should also practice good hand hygiene, use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), and follow proper procedures for cleaning and disinfecting surfaces. These practices can help reduce cross-contamination between different areas.
Another important practice is using cleaning products and equipment correctly. Cleaning technicians should read product labels and follow manufacturer instructions for cleaning and disinfecting products. They should understand chemical hazards and use PPE when required. Color-coded cleaning materials can also help reduce cross-contamination by keeping materials used in restrooms separate from materials used in other areas. Proper waste handling and awareness of bloodborne pathogens are also important when cleaning residential and commercial environments.
Medical cleaning practices can also protect people and the environment from harmful bacteria, germs, and viruses. When cleaning technicians are properly trained and follow consistent procedures, they can help keep homes and workplaces healthier. Good cleaning practices can protect residents, customers, employees, visitors, and cleaning staff. Professional cleaning companies can apply these principles across different building types and cleaning situations.

Properly cleaning healthcare facilities is important because the spaces are used mostly by people vulnerable to illness and infections. Healthcare spaces can frequently have contact with germs, bacteria, viruses, body fluids and other contaminants. Professional healthcare cleaning helps maintain a clean and safe environment for patients, staff and visitors.

Healthcare cleaning requires attention to frequently used areas like door handles, handrails, light switches, countertops, bathroom fixtures and other commonly touched areas should be cleaned and disinfected according to facility's procedures.  Cleaning staff should also understand proper chemical use, personal protective equipment, hand hygiene, waste handling and the method of preventing cross contamination.

The cleaning technicians need proper training to work around patients, healthcare workers and visitors. Technicians should understand bloodborne pathogens, chemical hazards, appropriate cleaning and disinfection procedures and understand the importance of following established protocols.

A healthcare cleaning program requires consistency and attention to details when on duty. There must also be clean communication among technicians and management to help identify areas that need additional attention.

One green cleaning product I have used is baking soda. I like using baking soda because it is inexpensive, easy to find, and useful for many different cleaning tasks. I have used it to help remove odors, clean sinks, and scrub surfaces without relying on harsh chemicals.

In my opinion, baking soda works very well for everyday cleaning and deodorizing. It may not replace every commercial cleaner, but I have found it to be effective for light stains, odors, and general surface cleaning. Overall, I think baking soda is a simple and environmentally friendly option to keep available as part of a green cleaning program.
