High school football players burned after cleaning mistake

MARYLAND (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Several high school football players are recovering after a cleaning mistake sent them to the hospital with severe burns.

We should warn you, some of the pictures are graphic.

School officials at Montgomery County High School in Maryland say a cleaning crew was ordered to deep clean the locker rooms after a player was suspected of having a staph infection.

Workers used a powerful disinfectant on the walls, floors and equipment.

But they also used the same chemical on the football player's pads and helmets, giving the students first and second degree chest and back burns.

"Worst pain I've ever been in my life," said one student.

"He was in great pain. He was 16. I hate to admit this, but he was crying. It was overwhelming," said parent Jabal Ray.

The players will be taking some time off to recover.

The parents say they are outraged.

The school's principal sent a letter home apologizing for the incident. He also said the school would take better precautions next time.

Chimney Fire a Reminder of Cleaning Importance

GASTONIAundefinedFire fighters in Gastonia say a chimney fire is a good reminder to take precautions before using fireplaces or wood stoves.

The fire spread from a fireplace into a wall in a home on Davis Park Road early Wednesday morning.

No injuries were reported.

Firefighters say homeowners should have their chimneys and heating systems inspected annually, clear the area around hearths of debris and decorations, and keep glass doors on hearths open while burning fires to keep creosote from building up in chimneys.

New products on the market are designed to clean surfaces, including kitchen counters and bathroom sinks, with only water! Blogger Becky Rapinchuk is known as the "clean mama." She's been using natural cleaning products in her home for quite some time. She said, "I make pretty much everything as a homemade cleaner."

But now, a growing number of cleaning tools are aimed at taking the "green clean" one step further. From windows, to floors, even the kitchen counter and bathrooms. Products on the market, many made of microfiber, are designed to work with plain old water and without the need for chemical cleaners. Becky is a fan. Janitor Killed At Golf Resort - Police On The Hunt

HOOVER, AL -

The Hoover Police Department is investigating the death of a contracted janitor at the Marriott Renaissance Ross Bridge Golf Resort & Spa.

“We did receive a 9-1-1 call at 5:19 this morning," Hoover police captain Gregg Rector told Alabama's 13. "An employee at Ross Bridge Renaissance resort found an individual lying in the floor -- obviously deceased.”

The murder victim was on the floor in a downstairs corridor. The area is an employee-only area connecting the kitchen to the loading dock.

“The victim is a contract worker who works for a janitorial service that does cleaning for the hotel." The dead man, according to police, worked for a contract janitorial service, HSS Hospitality Staffing Solutions based in Atlanta.

The victim was not alone last night .Rector says the man was part of a crew that showed up for work last night about 10:30 or 11 p.m.

WASHINGTON – It’s time for flu vaccine again and while it’s important for the whole family, this year health officials have some different advice for different ages: Certain kids should opt for the ouchless nasal spray. Seniors, expect to get a new kind of pneumonia shot along with that flu jab.

And too many young and middle-age adults are skipping the vaccine, says the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention – even though there are more options than ever.

“The best way to protect yourself against the flu is to get a flu vaccination,” said CDC Director Dr. Tom Frieden on Thursday, before rolling up his sleeve to get his own flu shot.

Miami Janitorial Service Owner Charged With Fraud - Bouncing checks and not paying workers compensation.

The owner of a Miami janitorial service was arrested Thursday for allegedly cheating on his workers' compensation insurance under cleaning contracts for Miami-Dade County government buildings.

Pedro M. Diaz, the owner and president of Best Janitorial & Supplies Inc., was accused of underreporting his payroll to avoid paying $34,000 in workers' compensation insurance plus $19,000 in administrative fees he would have owed his payroll processing contractor. In addition, many of Best's payroll checks bounced.

Best held county contracts from 2004 until 2013 to clean Miami-Dade police stations, courthouses and the .....

Sulfuric stench clears Petaluma Target

Firefighters responded around 9:50 a.m. to a report of an employee having a medical problem at the store at 401 Kenilworth Drive, Petaluma fire Capt. and Acting Battalion Chief Jude Prokop said.

Additional ambulances and fire personnel responded after a 911 dispatcher was told there was a sulfur-type odor in a storage room and more employees needed assistance, Prokop said.

Fire crews evacuated the store and set up a field treatment area for patients.

The store was closed while fire crews investigated the cause of the smell, Prokop said.

The odor was traced to a janitorial area in the rear storage area and the fire department’s hazardous materials team checked the area with gas monitors.

The odor was found to be coming from a malfunctioning sewer drain, Prokop said.

Principals Complaining That Schools Are Not Clean Enough

Fithy buildings. Principals overseeing cleaning or hiring extra help out of pocket. Teachers scrambling to clean classrooms in time for the first days of school. Reports of missing, broken and misplaced equipment. Mouse poop.

That’s what many Chicago Public School principals say resulted after CPS privatized janitorial services in the schools to the tune of $340 million, and neither CPS nor Aramark have fixed the problems even after being informed of the situation.

UPDATE:
CPS to lay off 476 custodians

Some 226 principals (CPS operates 516 schools) responded to a survey taken by AAPPLE, a new activist group under the Chicago Principals and Administrators Association. The Aramark contract is the first issue the group is tackling, calling now on the Board of Education to rescind its $240 million contract with Aramark if the facilities giant can’t maintain “ordinary tidiness” standards known in the industry as APPA Level 2.
