It is important for cleaning employees and staff to know about bloodborne pathogens because anyone exposed to them are at risk for serious or life-threatening illnesses. Bloodborne pathogens are infectious microorganisms present in blood that can cause disease in humans. The pathogens include hepatitis B virus (HBV), hepatitis C virus (HCV), and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), the virus that causes AIDS.

An employer is required by law to provide employees with bloodborne pathogens training.  This will ensure that the employee understands how to use safe practices when handling potentially hazardous materials such as blood, vomit, and bodily fluids.  It protects workers who can reasonably be anticipated to come into contact with them as a result of doing their job duties.

Once the employee is trained on bloodborne pathogens, they will understand the employers responsibility to provide them with personal protective equipment, hepatitis vaccinations and post exposure treatment free of charge to them.  They will also understand the steps to take to report a potential exposure to the employer.

Bloodborne pathogens:  infectious microorganisms in human blood that can cause disease and kill humans.

Cleaning technicians need to be educated on human bodily fluids as they can contain very infectious and deadly diseases known as pathogens. These pathogens include, but are not limited to, hepatitis B (HBV), hepatitis C (HCV) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). One should always assume that bodily fluids contain bloodborne pathogens and with proper training a cleaning tech can avoid contamination to themselves and others. Proper handling of waste material can keep you and others safe from these contaminants.

Knowing how to handle waste material by using absorbents, spatulas, and other mechanical tools to collect bodily fluids and reducing exposure by learning, knowing, and practicing safe handling techniques is imperative to the safety of the cleaning technician performing the work.

Understanding the need to wear Person Protection Equipment such as eye protection, gloves, face masks can save a life. Making sure not to splash, splatter, or spread the fluids can prevent accidental contamination to open mount nose or sores.  Cleaning technicians must be diligent in following these personal safety precautions to protect their person health as there are no second chances when it comes to deadly diseases.

Dispose of materials in proper containers, marked bags, and proper receptacles and do not manually compact, squeeze or over handle any means of disposal container this can keep the cleaning technicians and others who may encounter these containers safe.

Grandma used baking soda to remove foul smells in the washing. It whitened and brightened our laundry for generations. How did the "Modern Woman" (at the time..;) decide that new laundry detergents must be better because they were "New and Modern." is unknown. However, It probably made sense that when you bought a new machine or just ran out of your tried and true, you should try a new and improved product. One thing is true, television was just available in the homes and product marking was at historical highs. Over the years it seems that the availability of premixed soaps and ready to use packs, liquid options etc. took the place on the shelf where our baking soda and vinegar once resided. It was several years ago when I became aware of the natural powers of everyday items and household staples for use as handy, safe and effective cleaners.

The truth is, it took a teenage boy to set me straight about cleaners. He was taking my living skills class and we were studying laundry tips. He educated the whole class about common stain removal solutions, bathroom cleaners, and green alternatives that are better for the earth and our health. Come to find out he gained his knowledge from his amazing foster Mom. After my education, I switched many of my household chemicals out for recycled or refillable alternatives. I love the idea of doing my small part to help out the ozone and limiting my families exposure to harmful toxins in our home. Excellence in customer service is the seed in which everything in janitorial service/commercial cleaning blooms from. Unlike some businesses in cleaning I want to be able to communicate with my customers to get their vision and then to carry it out to ensure success. When their is a problem my  experiences in the past has taught me a lot about not assuming, but to be open minded and ready to listen.  IJCSA Members are a team of individuals that are pursuing that excellence. Cleaning is done not only for the aesthetics but it is always looked as a health need. Cleanliness is synonymous with heath. Yet many of the products and methods utilized today as standard cleaning methods or choices pose a health hazard rather than preserving it. The chemicals used in mainstream cleaning products are more often selected and advertised by the efficiency with little regard to the environmental impact.

Gone unchecked the impact of everyday cleaning in our homes, businesses and industries produce waste streams that damage the environment and expose the user to harmful chemicals. Our bodies as well as the environment are not meant to handle these exposure and both react adversely to its effects.

Sickness, allergies, illnesses have all been linked to the exposure of chemicals contained in cleaning products. Our environment and the hosts of animals that share this planet continue to suffer the impact of these choices.

There is as in all things a tipping point. A moment where a normal cell becomes cancerous, a river cannot sustain life, a coral reef dies. Changing prior to the tipping point is the key. To make better choices before the damage cannot be undone.
