FLORISSANT, Mo. (KMOV.com) -- Seventy-year-old Janet Becker of Florissant got a random call from Anytime Duct Cleaning. The company claimed they could clean her air ducts for about $55. But the bill Becker received by the time they were finished was for more than $2,700.

“They dropped it on me in the end,” Becker told News 4 Investigates. She said the crew from Anytime told her she had mold.

They installed what appeared to be a lower quality UV light, which alone cost around $1,800. The light was powered with bundled extension cords which had ground wires that were broken off.

"They did a half-assed job. I don’t like to say that word,” said Becker. But Becker is not the only customer who feels this way.

Dale Ponce, 83, of Ellisville was offered a very similar deal: Air duct cleaning for $44.95. But after the job was complete, he was billed for $600.

“They really screwed me around that's what they did … (they said) everything was moldy” said Ponce.

The company has an “F” rating with the Better Business Bureau.  The company’s tactics are simple--they offer cheap air duct cleaning to get in the door, then drive up the cost by claiming there's mold.

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - A family contacted 23ABC after the carpet cleaning company they hired made matters worse and they ended up hiring another company to fix the problem.

We looked into how homeowners can educate themselves to keep a similar scenario from happening to them.

"At first, I thought he did a good job. However, after a couple of days the house started smelling like mold and the carpet was still wet," said Rick Keel.

Keel tried to contact the company several times, but they were either unreachable or they hung up on him when he inquired about their mistake.

At that point, Keel was concerned that he would have to fork up several thousand dollars for brand new carpet.

Keel shared his plight on social media and several people responded offering recommendations or reputable carpet cleaning companies. One of those companies is Sun Carpet and Upholstery Cleaning.

A biohazard truck arrived on the block today which had large blue sealed containers in the back.

Mr Levine said: 'They're going to be looking for body fluids and they're going to be looking for any item which would have been in contact with Dr Spencer's body, like sheets and pillow cases and tooth brushes and bath towels.

'The apartment will be cleaned and sanitized so it can be used again safely. We're hoping that Dr Spencer himself can return home soon.'

On every Wednesday since the start of the school year, a small group of parents equipped with gloves, brushes, brooms and other cleaning supplies descend on the school on the border of Los Feliz and Silver Lake to clean up bathrooms and other areas  while educating its approximately 1,500 students on how to keep their campus clean.

“We want to bring back a sense of pride and community that will build morale and help the students,” said Renae Plant, who organized the cleans up as part of her work on the school’s beautification committee.

After hearing many concerns and complaints from students and their parents about how dirty the bathrooms were, Plant, whose daughter attends King, took matters into her own hands by organizing the Wednesday cleans up between 10 a.m. and 1 pm.

Utica, N.Y. - The world's largest LED free-hanging chandelier was lowered today at the Stanley Theatre. The 7,000 pound chandelier is getting some tuning up by Meyda lighting for the next couple of days. They were busy wiping it down and vacuuming the dust out. According to Max Cohen, Director of Hospitality Marketing at Meyda Lighting, they will also be running a couple of tests during the night to see if the new equipment is up to par so there are not any problems in the middle of a show.

The one plus is that since it is lit by LED lights, there are no light bulbs that need to be replaced. But because the chandelier has not been lowered since 2008, the Meyda crew is going through to check everything to make sure that the equipment they are using is still working and find ways to make it brighter and use less power.

The international labor union SEIU says it has “real concerns about the safety of cleaning crews and other people who work at airports, such as wheelchair agents.”

The union’s Occupational Health and Safety Director Mark Catlin told Here & Now’s Jeremy Hobson that beyond the primary concern for health care workers providing direct care to possible Ebola patients, he is also thinking about the safety of cleaning crews in airplanes and at airports, and even laundering companies that clean hospital bedding and uniforms.

“What’s really been missing [from the discussion] is the fact that it’s employers in this country under our U.S. law undefined under the Occupational Safety and Health Act undefined that have the primary responsibility to maintain a healthy and safe workplace,” Catlin said. “So it’s the employers’ responsibility to take the CDC guidance, mandatory requirements by federal OSHA and other agencies and incorporate those into site-specific plans for how workers are going to be protected, the protocols they are going to follow and how they’re going to be trained and how they’re going to get the equipment.....
