Being trained to know what chemicals are destroying our ozone, causing us to have coughs and infections is a vital part of the certification. Having someone that you can trust to select green cleaning products to minimize these ailments in our society and planet is key. Petrochemicals are known to cause many different skin irritations, and are being study for many more harmful affects including cancer.

The over use of Bacteriacides is causing new strains of Bacteria to form. These new bacteria are gaining resistance to many of the harmful chemicals that we are over using currently to clean. This is why it is imperative to use green cleaners in all environments possible as the more resistance these bacteria form the harder it is for our bodies to fight them off. Only proper knowledge of when and where to use green chemicals can help slow down this dangerous trend.

Chlorine is so commonly used that most people have become oblivious to its harmful effects. This is the number 1 culprit in household poisonings, but also the most abundantly used chemical weapon in WWI. Chlorine has the ability to kill you fast or slow, as it is acutely poisonous and carcinogenic. Yet Chlorine can still be found in Bleach, Dishwasher detergent, scouring powders and tub, and tile cleaners. Chlorine is also the most dangerous Chemical for our ozone. The CDC website states: "When chlorine gas comes into contact with moist tissues such as the eyes, throat, and lungs, an acid is produced that can damage these tissues." Some awareness has been built by the 1990 clean air act and the the American Public Health Association has been working to get this out of common cleaning chemicals.  We have still have a long way to go.

While cleaning windows it is easy to find yourself spraying above your head with a window cleaner. I mean, you have to get every spot, right? This practice gets unhealthy especially with Ammonia based cleaners as the are damaging to your skin, eyes, and respiratory passages. According to WEB MD: Tell your doctor right away if any of these serious side effects occur: vomitingdiarrheaheadache. Seek immediate medical attention if any of these rare but very serious side effects occur: trouble breathingeye painvision changes.

Now that i have shown you the extremities of these harmful chemicals lets talk about how to avoid them. First seeking out chemicals that are biodegradable to protect our planet. Then use microfiber as much as you can without extra cleaning chemicals. Then when it comes time to clean with more than microfiber look For homemade substitutions that can protect you, your employees, clients and the planet. You can Find a list of them Here: https://www.ijcsa.org/Green-Certification-Course but the absolute best way is to find an experienced Professional at https://www.ijcsa.org/Green-Cleaning-Services

Just like an old locomotive train that takes off slowly then picks up speed overtime, green cleaning is picking up speed and becoming more and more accepted within the cleaning industry and outside the marketplace. Similarly to CFCs, toxic and harmful cleaning chemicals will become something of the past, as manufacturers bend to the global pressures to produce environmentally friendly chemicals. There are certain best practices that will emerged from implementing a green cleaning program.

Green cleaning is a system that employs both green chemicals and green equipment. However, a successful green cleaning program is not just a matter of having the right cleaning products. We must remember there is a great deal of marketing that has gone into the promotion of many of these pretty looking, sweet smelling and dangerous to health cleaning chemicals existing on the market. Many people have become used to using these chemicals over a sustain period and will not just give them up easily. Therefore achieving buy-in by all stakeholders is critically important.

There are experts on the market that have offered advice on the subject and the International Janitorial Cleaning Services Association (IJCSA) offers certification in Green Cleaning https://www.ijcsa.org/Green-Certification-Course . The way I plan to implement green cleaning into my business will follow the following procedures:

Conduct a baseline audit – I will conduct a baseline audit to determine how much of the harmful chemicals I have in stock and how to treat with the disposal of these chemicals. Secondly, I will secure suppliers of green cleaning chemicals and determine what are the best green cleaning products on the market. I might even mix my own green cleaning products. Thirdly, I will ensure to formulate green cleaning procedures. Procedures and guideline ensure products are used safely and securely to promote good health and safety. Fourthly I will conduct training workshops to educate staff and other stakeholders on the benefits of green cleaning. With IJCSA’s green certification in hand, I will market and promote my business as “Green” and “Environmental Friendly” on as many platforms as possible.
