As an asthma sufferer and now new home owner, I can say first hand how important it is to have a clean space but one also free of inducing cancer or breathing difficulties. Even more recently in the news, chemical manufacturing companies have come under fire for their continued use of ground and water contaminating substances. Every day improper and over- use of chemicals/cleaners expose our skin (especially the forearms and hands) to a multitude of toxins and that's just in our homes! Another example are the huge populations of pyrethrin-resistent bugs and antibiotic resistant bacteria.

If we are going to change this then we must implement an action plan. Green cleaning is not a fad. This is a viable way to get and keep living spaces clean and sanitized without the need for toxic chemical exposure. By Cleaning with eco-friendly products and practices such as high grade essential oils, green products, hepa vac's, and steam cleaning, we can eliminate cross contamination and provide safe-touch surfaces for people and pets. This offers peace of mind that not only are areas clean but we've reduced our carbon-footprint producing less waste and chemical run off.

I have spent 20 years in the janitorial industry.  And, On numerous occasions I have ran across mold in one form or another.  Knowing that I did not possess the technical knowledge to properly clean the mold, I often contracted it out or brought in specialties company to do the work for the client .  Which ,  I realized that the cleaning company who specialized in cleaning mold was making 5 or 10 times the income that I was making for half of the work.

One day I met an insurance adjuster who offered me the opportunity to do mold cleaning.  After coming to the knowledge that I was not certified or licensed by the state , he regretfully informed me that I was not qualified to receive a contract for cleaning mold.  He then explained to me how I just lost my company a substantial sum of money in that contract and I was  Devastated! So therefore I am now getting certified in Mold Cleaning at IJCSA!

When walking into a hospital early in the morning people get a nose full of a strong bleach smell. First thing that comes to mind is going to be, they just cleaned this area. Making people feel like they are in a clean environment, but what they don't know is that there are bad side affects. People can start to feel sick, like  headache, vomiting and maybe even getting skin burns. Some people working with bleach might not know that bleach can't be mix with other cleaning products. It is also bad for people who have pets. Animals walk and roll around the house and then lick themselves clean and getting that cleaning product in their mouth.

Using products that have a fragrance most people like to use, because it makes the air smell fresh. People can choose their favorite smell and it comes in all shapes and sizes. The company's that make the items don't have to label that there is phthalates in their product. Phthalates is a group of chemicals used to make plastic more flexible. It is harmful males and their reproductive system. This substance is also found in other item, so make sure to read labels before buying the product.

When cleaning windows the big thing people think about is if there are streaks left on the windows. When buying a window cleaning product  most of them guarantee no streaks will be left be hide. How can this product do that with an ingredient called ammonia. Ammonia evaporates, so it doesn't leave any marks. People that are the most affected by this product are the elderly, people with asthma, and workers using this product everyday. They will end up getting bronchitis as a result. Need a place to go for safe window cleaning go to http://www.ijcsa.org/Green-Cleaning-Services.

Almost everyone one likes an all in one cleaning product or an all purpose cleaner. It helps save money and help minimize the product amount. When a company choose to use an all green clean product they can find items like these to buy. It helps the workers, so they don't have to carry around so many different cleaning products. They also don't have to worry if it is going to be harmful for other surfaces.

When cleaning a bathroom that gets a lot of traffic going through it people want it to be very clean. One item would be the toilet, using heavy duty sanitizing cleaner is the go to product. What is going to supersize people is that using a green clean product that uses a plant extract has the same affect as the heavy duty chemical cleaner. If that doesn't make your mouth drop it also have a fresh smell and it lost for a long time. It also leave the toilet sparkling clean.

One of my favor items to use are cleaning wipes. Most of the cleaning wipe you find in the healthcare setting is going to be bleach wipes and bacteria wipes. Now if you have never used them they are every hard on bare skin. If someone touches the surface after it has been wipe down by one of these products they end up getting white spots that burn in that location. When using an all natural product people don't have to worry about getting skin burns. It is also safe for using in a home setting with or without kids.

Green cleaning will give my cleaning business the marketing edge it needs. Although the community here is small, there are not a lot of competing cleaning companies that exclusively green clean. This certification will show my customers I understand the value of "green cleaning." I've honed my craft to expertly include, professional green cleaning, incentives and bonuses, customized options, etc. But more importantly, customers health and wellness. I take it as seriously as my own health.

This manner of approaching cleaning isn't limited to just housecleaning. Eco-friendly practices comes from an awareness already founded in preserving not just our immediate surroundings but the planet and future generations to come. It's a huge responsibility, but to affect change we must embrace a synergistic approach to non-toxic cleaning. This incorporates best practices combined with the most cutting edge GREEN products, that, and the burning desire to help others get and keep their living spaces healthy.

However, past efforts to leverage the virtually unregulated chemical industry have had less than favorable results.  "Passed during the mid 1970's, the Toxic Controlled Substances Act (TCSA) set to protect consumers failed to keep up with scientific advances or safely review thousands of products before entering the consumer market place. And once in the market place it was virtually impossible to "recall" those products. In fact, it wasn't until 2016, when then President Obama and Congress unanimously vote Frank R. Lautenberg Chemical Safety for the 21st Century Act into law." Environmental Def. Fund [online] 2018. Available at https://www.edf.org/health/toxic-chemicals-law-should-now-better-protect-us. Accessed 2018, July 10.

To free ourselves from dependence on our chemical bondage's we must unite and make permanent-- eco-friendly alternatives. This will cause a more harmonious balance and continued awareness to keep us accountable to our surroundings.

For all these reasons, best practices in the cleaning industry is vital. This industry AND its accrediting body must be upheld to a high standard from manufacture to marketing.  One such organisation, the International Janitorial Cleaning Services Assciation (IJCSA), is a network of like minded cleaning professionals who seek to uphold best cleaning practices so that its consumers have peace of mind knowing their cleaning services found through its directory http://www.ijcsa.org/Green-Cleaning-Services contain-- laser focused companies set on giving the best, cutting-edge, cleaning services because they are equipped with the knowledge and tools to do so.

Being “Green Cleaning Certified” will benefit me in a way that will hopefully increase my chance for a promotion within my organization.

Once promoted I would start the process of instilling the benefits of green cleaning to my superiors by explaining to them how cost and time effective it can be in the different aspects of our department such as:

    • Product cost in both purchasing and waste.

    • Reduce human health risks there by reducing the cost of medical expenses from common toxic chemical sensitivities, burns etc.

    • Loss of production by employees that are out due to chemical sensitivities.

    • Reduced liability costs

Using natural cleaners are easier and cheaper to implement.  No longer will you need body armor to protect you from the chemicals you are using, no need for MSDS papers on file wherever your chemicals are used and stored, no more having every re-fillable bottle labeled with pictograms, no need for special disposal practices.

If not promoted, may form my own Green Cleaning Company and list my company in the  International Janitorial Cleaning Services Association Green Cleaning members directory :)
