"Each year, there are a great number of people in the United States and the world who become very ill or even die because of influenza," Jim Stone, the Director of the Sangamon County Department of Public Health said. "It's an upper respiratory illness that attacks people with chronic illnesses."

A few years ago, a new flu virus surfaced: H1N1. In 2009, the CDC estimated up to 6,000 deaths occurred because of H1N1. They say flu viruses are constantly changing, so it's not uncommon for new flu virus strains to appear.

"That's the reason why you have to be so diligent about this," Stone said.

And that's why health experts recommend a flu shot, especially if you are in one of these groups:
    • If you have a high risk of developing serious complications if you get the flu.
    • If you have medical conditions like asthma, diabetes, and chronic lung disease.
    • If you are younger than 5 and older than 65.

More than 1,000 Columbus janitors are currently negotiating a new union contract in the hopes of bettering themselves and living the American Dream. Every day these workers clean property owned by some of America's largest corporations. And everything -- floors, windows, desks, kitchens, and toilets -- is spotless. The folks doing all this cleaning are largely African-American Somali, and Latino.

The cleaners helped Fortune 1000 corporations headquartered in the Columbus area to profit over $5 billion last year. Just think of how mad people get when there are no paper towels to dry their hands off with. Imagine the outcry that would occur if bathrooms stayed filthy and office wastepaper baskets over flowed. We'd have mutinies across corporate offices, and business would suffer.

PHOENIXVILLE — Borough council voted to approve a contract with a new janitorial service for the recently opened borough hall.

CleanNet U.S., out of Bala Cynwyd, will take over maintaining the building from CNS, which operates from several area offices.

The contract runs for a year at a rate of $39,464.

CNS cleaned the building from its opening and bid for the contract, actually coming in lowest, but Borough Manager Jean Krack classified CleanNet U.S. as the “lowest responsible bidder” due to “staff’s experience.”

WASHINGTON -The government shutdown may have caused many Park Service workers to be furloughed but one man from South Carolina armed with a leafblower and a push mower is taking it upon himself to clean up Washington's memorials in their place.

Chris Cox calls himself the Memorial Militia and he's been taking away trash, blowing away leaves and even using a chainsaw to clear branches from a path in the area of the National Mall near the Lincoln, World War II, Korean War, and Vietnam War Memorials.

He carries the state flag of South Carolina as he works and wears a bright red t-shirt with South Carolina across the front.

"Well the day the government shut down I was watching the news and they wouldn't stop talking about how vulnerable our monuments are, our  memorials, and that concerned me," said Cox, who is an artist and has been cleaning at the capitol for 8 days.

Even though it is “futile” to predict the severity of the upcoming flu season, health experts say people should get their shot early to lower their chances of catching the disease.

Typically the flu season begins in October and continues through May. However, experts say residents should not wait to get their flu shot, as it will protect them for the entire season. They note that the flu is always circulating and activity is already picking up in Texas.

While it is recommended that everybody over 6 months old get the flu shot, experts said it is especially important for pregnant women, people over the age of 65, very young children and people with underlying chronic health conditions because of increased risk of complications from the flu.

Through 2017, sales of janitorial equipment and supplies will be driven by continuing economic recovery and the corresponding return to higher levels of demand for cleaning activity, as well as expansion in the number of nonresidential establishments and floor space. Rising focus on sustainable practices will drive demand for higher value environmentally friendly products that use less water and cleaning solution than comparable items. Ergonomic products will also continue to support value growth. However, overall gains will be limited to an extent by the reluctance of companies to reintroduce cleaning and maintenance costs that they cut during the recession.

MARION COUNTY - An elementary school in Silver Springs is undergoing a deep cleaning after an infection outbreak kept almost 300 students home from school.

East Marion Elementary School sent 50 students home sick and the rest stayed home on Friday. It is not yet known the specific kind of infection but the school is taking the weekend to thoroughly clean using sanitizing foggers.

Parents are advised to keep sick students out of school until 24 hours after their symptoms end. The health department advises those in the area to regularly wash their hands.

The school plans to remain open on Monday.
