There was a time when safe, nontoxic household products were used as cleaning agents on a daily basis.   Examples include the fact that hot sauce cleans copper, olive oil brightens wood and cleans shoes, vinegar cleans brushes, and cornmeal soaks up grease. Today's green cleaning products also use many natural products found in the pantry.   Products such as lemon, lavender, and herbs are included in the non-toxic products that are safe for pets and children.

Our Oceans are key elements of our environment, and if we continue to pollute them with toxic cleaning agent, we face a grim future.  Plant life is necessary to produce 70 percent of the oxygen we get in the world.  If the toxic cleaners kill the plants, all of mankind is in deep trouble.  By using the nontoxic chemicals we are keeping the Oceans of the world clean and healthy to continue photosynthesis.

Also, quaternary ammonium compounds have detrimental effects on embryos and fetuses causing neural tube defects.  Although the data was collected from small animals, it is not hard to transfer the effects to larger species such as pets and humans.  These products have been classified as asthmagens, capable of causing severe asthma in humans as well as severe skin and eye irritations.

The study material listed under the course for Green Clean Certification by the IJCSA has an extensive list of chemicals that are considered to be toxic. The Environmental Working Group's Mission is to educate the public on how to be healthier, and this includes examining your cleaning agents. According to a team of researcher, many of the products that claim to be environmentally friendly are not.  It is up to the consumer to be proactive in reading labels and looking for toxic compounds.  Many chemicals banned in Europe because they are carcinogens are still used in the United States. Green cleaning promotes an overall healthier environment and human population.

Swept Away MDI as a certified Green Cleaning company will have tremendous effect and lasting positive benefits on our environment, clients and staff. Switching from a highly toxic chemical based operation to a green cleaning standard will enhance our social responsibility as a stakeholder in the fight for the eco-friendly advancement of our community.

When we attach a green cleaning certificate to our name as a residential and commercial cleaning entity it will attract a wider client base. Many persons take their health and the health of their families and environment very seriously; and we hope to assist them in making choices that suit everyone involved. This will include the use of natural ingredients, microfiber rags, biodegradable garbage bags, cellulose sponges and other items which are as equally effective yet less harsh to our health and surroundings. With this certification we will have added value in educating people on the need to go green.

We will focus on adopting green products that reduces exposure to toxic chemicals as well as educate and train our team members regarding this. The reduction of airborne dust and chemical gases are vital to not only staff but to our clients as well. Many of the commercial chemicals used causes irritation to the user and those who come in contact with it. According to the clevelandclinic.org it states that, “The specific chemicals in these ingredients include ammonia, ethylene glycol monobutyl acetate, sodium hypochlorite and/or trisodium phosphate. Depending on the ingredients used, all-purpose cleaners can irritate the skin, eyes, nose and throat. They can be highly poisonous to both humans and animals if swallowed.”1

While many manufacturers don’t publish all the chemicals due to their harmful nature, we will ensure that we support the ones who do; as these are the ones who use ingredients more naturally derived. This research and validation method will support the drive for a cleaner, healthier environment. In a lung.org article it stated, “VOCs and other chemicals released when using cleaning supplies contribute to chronic respiratory problems, allergic reactions and headaches. Studies are underway to assess how these chemicals affect people who have asthma and other respiratory illnesses.”2

Our responsibility to our environment and ourselves will ensure that we maintain safe practices not only in the use of naturally derived chemicals but also for the easy disposal of the products. Using water and vinegar to clean windows makes for a safe and economical alternative. Baking soda acts as a good cleaning agent for scrubbing surfaces. These and other do-it-yourself solutions provide great economic relief and substitute for harsh chemical use. Compared to other cleaning products homemade alternatives reduce chemical consumption and improves the environmental sustainability such as improved air quality and recycling.
