         Pathogens from the Greek word ‘pathos’ means disease causing. As the world braces for the next great pandemic our job as sanitation engineers becomes more complicated and even more in demand. New pathogens pose threats that traditional cleaners can’t treat. 

         Working in an environment of potential exposure to bloodborne pathogens is not just limited to hospitals and nursing homes anymore. Employers have the responsibility to provide a safe work environment but with increased awareness about exposure, you have a responsibility to yourself as an owner to protect your company. Knowing and understanding your cleaning environment is first. Providing proper solvents to neutralized pathogen is next. Spores can’t be sanitized with traditional solvents. Then with increased reactivity of these advanced solvents protecting your employees becomes of even more importance. Chemical exposure to these kind of cleaning solvents is very difficult to treat and leads to loss work days and decreased productivity. 
         As the world becomes more hyper-sensitive to threats from pathogens our jobs will take on greater importance and place us on the frontline of this war. We must educate ourselves and most importantly protect ourselves.

    It is extremely important to be educated in knowing bloodborne pathogens. Bloodborne pathogens are pathogenic microorganisms that are present in human blood and can cause disease in humans.

    OSHA, the Occupational Safety And Health Administration, has developed a Bloodborne Pathogen Standard, and it has become a universal precaution.

    It recommends that blood and certain body fluids from all patients be considered potentially infectious, and that infection control precautions must be taken to minimize the risk of exposure.

    Within the workplace, bloodborne pathogens, or BBPs, can be spread among coworkers through a number of different ways. They can be transferred through blood and infectious bodily fluids by touching your eyes, nose or mouth. They spread through cuts, abrasions, rashes, burns or paper cuts of the skin. It's important to never eat, drink, smoke or apply lip balm in areas where there is a possibility you can be exposed. Blood borne pathogens are all over the place and in areas we least expect. So it is very important to take proper precautions in cleaning and keeping employees safe from serious health risks.

    All janitorial or cleaning staff shall be made aware of bloodborne exposure and ways to prevent exposure. In everyday life we are exposed in one form or another. It is important to educate yourself and your staff on this.

    Bloodborne pathogens are infectious and you should wear protective equipment and or provide to your staff proper protection to prevent exposure. This will include equipment like gloves, face masks, eye wear, or gowns. this will prevent serious illness, and possibly death.

    Everyone has the legal right to not work in hazardous conditions without knowledge on how to protect their selves. Never push down trash with your hands, or laundry as they may have sharp objects like needles that can expose you. Stay educated and up to date on blood pathogens in your workplace and with your staff.

    Implementing carpet cleaning practices into my cleaning business would only help my company.

    In a medical or health care environment cleaning practices must follow stringent rules and regulations to ensure the safety of those using the space. The practices used in healthcare environments can be used in other non-healthcare areas as well. Things like performing hand hygiene, proper cleaning techniques, and cleaning and disinfecting of high touch surfaces not only reduce the spread of germs in medical environments but can also be used for residential and commercial situations as well.

    In an office building, germs can travel from the front door to the coffee pot in under 60 seconds. This is because contact is one of the biggest transmitters of germs, so by using proper hand hygiene you can greatly reduce the spread of germs and viruses in residential and commercial settings. Using warm water and soap when hands are visibly dirty and an alcohol-based sanitizer when they aren’t regularly is good practice for all cleaning situations. Also, properly cleaning and disinfecting high touch surfaces will greatly reduce the spread of germs. Make sure to clean an area to ensure it is free of debris, this will take several wipes. Then wipe over with damp disinfectant cloth so that the surface remains wet for the specified amount of time of the disinfectant label. By using proper hand hygiene and cleaning and disinfecting techniques when cleaning residential and commercial areas you can greatly reduce the spread of germs.

    Correct cleaning techniques are important for ensuring an area is properly cleaned and disinfected. After performing hand hygiene, putting on appropriate personal protective equipment, or PPE, should be your next step. Then when cleaning an area start from the top of the room, with dusting and work your way down. You should then start with dry cleaning and finish with wet, such as damp mopping. When performing any type of wiping or mopping a figure ‘8’ to ensure the entire surface area is covered. Following a routine when cleaning areas will also reduce the chance of you missing an area or task.

    When cleaning a medical facility there are more regulations than those in residential and commercial areas, however that does not mean you cannot implement those practices into non-medical area cleaning. Using practices such as good hand hygiene, thorough cleaning and disinfecting, and correct cleaning techniques in medical as well as residential and commercial areas will help reduce the spread of germs and protect of the individuals cleaning and using the space.     Now, more than ever is the time to refresh yourself, and your employees, on the Do' and Don't of cleanliness, washing properly, and protocols surrounding the Bloodborne Pathogen.

    It is the law to make sure that our employees are trained for any situation they encounter.  Basic details are what make the difference between providing services correctly and incorrectly, not just that, in our current state it can literally mean difference between life and death.

    IJCSA & OSHA is all about our safety.  As an employer it is our responsibility to protect, train and communicate all protocols which provide quality, safe service to our customers.
