DAILY CLEANING

Your reception area represents your customer’s first impression. You want it to always be bright, clean and inviting. Every individual needs a clean work environment. A well organized and clean workplace helps to make everyone more productive. Cleaning tasks for the reception area and office spaces include:

1. Empty waste receptacles and replace liners. Wash as needed.
2. Vacuum all carpets and mats

How To Clean Cabinets

Regular Cleaning: Exterior
Most cabinet types, including metal, plastic laminate, painted wood, and vinyl cabinets, can be cleaned with a solution of dish soap liquid and warm water. This simple and mild solution is enough to get food smudges, dust, and mild grease build-up off of your cabinets. Rinse thoroughly with another clean cloth, before drying with a final cloth.
Heavy Duty Cleaning: Exterior
For heavy build-ups of grease and dust, your best bet is a commercial cleaner designed to be used on wood kitchen cabinets. My favorites are cleaners with orange oil. They have a way of breaking down the thick grime that can accumulate on cabinet surfaces. Be sure to read the instructions before using, and test first in a hidden spot.
Interior Cleaning
Empty each cabinet, beginning with the top most one. Remove shelf lining if necessary. Wash the interior of the cabinets with warm water and a mild detergent. If the interior cabinets have a lot of crumbs and residue, it may be a good idea to vacuum the cabinets out after they've been emptied, before wiping them down. Rinse with another clean damp cloth. Wipe dry with an additional cloth.
Cleaning Cabinet Contents
Wipe down dusty cans and containers with warm water and dish soap on a dampened cloth. Throw out any items that have expired. Leave the cabinets open for a 1-2 hours to fully dry, before replacing the contents of the cabinet.

Tips:

An all-purpose cleaner can be used to clean cabinets too, but it's important to test cleaners in a hidden spot to make sure that they won't damage your cabinet's finish.

How to Clean Linoleum The Right Way

Steps to Cleaning Linoleum Floors

Assemble your gear before cleaning a linoleum floor. What we've got here is a large bowl (or bucket), a cotton cloth, an old "Swiffer" mop thing, and some apple cider vinegar (5% acidity). I chose to use a large mixing bowl to keep the vinegar in because the extra width prevents spillage, and later on I can simply wash it out in the sink with some organic dish soap. The Swiffer mop is a really great thing without the cleaning pads because you can easily attach a cotton cloth soaked in vinegar instead, and you'll save a few years on your lower back too.

Fill a bucket, or in this case a large bowl, with as much vinegar as you think you'll need to clean the linoleum. You can dilute the vinegar with water if you choose. The amount of vinegar you choose to clean your floor with depends largely on your sense of judgment. Is your linoleum floor really dirty, or are you just giving it a quick mop? Vinegar only has about a 5% acidity content, so don't worry about doing any damage to your floors with it. The great thing about vinegar is that you don't need a lot of it to clean a linoleum floor because linoleum isn't porous, so it doesn't soak up your cleaning solution. It's all about frugality in our home.

Soak your cloth rag in the vinegar and wring it out so it's damp, not dripping wet. A lot of linoleum floors aren't sealed properly at the edges, so it's best not to let the vinegar pool up and risk soaking the carpet or letting it seep into the surrounding floor boards. This is very true for us because our linoleum is right next to an unsealed hardwood floor, so it's best to just keep the rag damp. Besides, linoleum is so easy to clean, you don't really need anything more than a damp cloth and a little elbow grease. Nothing says "non-toxic" like a little elbow grease.

Now this is the hard part: I want you to push the mop back and forth over the linoleum to the beat of your favorite music.Seriously, you shouldn't need directions for this step, but I'll tell you something. Go over the whole floor once to kind of loosen things up a little, then go back over it with a bit more pressure to make sure you really get some of that sticky stuff off the floor. After that, I usually go back over it lightly, just to make sureundefinedI'm a little OCD. Take the cloth off, mix it around in the vinegar, wring it out, and reattach it as often as you think you need to.

There shouldn't be much waiting before you can use your linoleum floor again. Now, because I used a large mixing bowl to put the vinegar in, I usually move on and do the rest of the dishes as well. I don't usually bother laundering my cotton cloths because they're cleaned just as easily if I let them soak in the sink while I do the dishes. Then I wring it out really well, and hang it on the faucet to dry. Of course, if you're not comfortable mixing your dirty dishes with your floor stuffs, you can always use a bucket and launder the cotton cloth.

Does cleaning a linoleum floor with vinegar actually disinfect and bring out the natural shine of your linoleum? You be the judge.

Linoleum is Green Flooring for the Masses

No one can object to the fact that linoleum is a convenient flooring alternative to more expensive types of flooring like vinyl, slate, and marble. That's what makes linoleum so popular. And according to many industry websites, linoleum is made chiefly from organic materials and is hypo-allergenic; these are good things to have in a flooring material. I wasn't convinced, so I did some research.

As it turns out, linoleum is made from linseed oil (hence the name), pine tree rosin, wood flour, cork flour, limestone, jute, and a range of pigments. According to greenfloors.com, linoleum is particularly "green" in its attributes because the production/recycling process of linoleum is almost a closed system. That is, the energy created by incinerating linoleum (if people choose not to recycle it) is almost equal to the energy it takes to produce new sheets of linoleum.

Many of the linoleum flooring alternatives, like Marmoleum, are made from natural materials as well.

Cleaning Linoleum Naturally

Method now makes a really cool ergonomic and organic floor cleaning solution called oMop. The fabric of the mop is a microfiber cloth, which is great for picking up the very smallest particles and most difficult liquids. The great thing about microfiber cloth is not only their amazingly absorbent properties, but the fact that you can wash and reuse them, instead of throwing toxic waste (ie. Swiffer pads) into the garbage. All of the soaps that come with the Method oMop are non-toxic, just like all of their other products.

Ecover makes a pretty good floor soap, too, which can be used on anything from marble to tile to linoleum to wood.

A Personal Daily Cleaning Checklist

Kitchen

Clear out and wipe down the sink (5 minutes).
No piles of dirty dishes! Move them into the dishwasher, and wipe the sink with a sponge.
Wipe down countertops and stove (1 minute).
Clean splatters and spills with a damp cloth or sponge and an all-purpose cleanser.
Wipe problem spots on the floor (2 minutes).
You can save a full-floor mop for the weekend, but use the same cloth (once you’ve finished with the countertops) to quickly clean any spills or sticky spots, which will attract dirt and get more noticeable if left alone.
Fold or hang dish towels (30 seconds).
Even if they’re clean, a jumble of dish towels on the counter can look messy. Take a few moments to fold or hang them.

Bathroom

Wipe out the sink (30 seconds).
If you use a premoistened cloth to wipe your face, swipe the sink bowl and faucet handles with it, too. Or use a washcloth, paper towel, or a product like Windex Glass and Surface Wipes, which don’t leave streaks on chrome or mirror.
Clean splatters off the mirror (15 seconds).
Got foamy toothpaste spray on the mirror? Do a quick swipe with the same cloth you used on the sink.
Wipe the toilet seat and rim (15 seconds).
Same cloth! Just do the toilet last.
Swoosh the toilet bowl with a brush (15 seconds).
If you see a ring, give it a quick scrub.
Squeegee the shower door (30 seconds).
Wipe down glass doors to remove water droplets that can cause spotting. No squeegee? Use a dry towel.
Spray the shower and curtain liner with a shower mist (15 seconds).
A quick spray with a daily cleanser will reduce buildup of mildew and soap scum.

Bedroom

Make your bed (2 minutes).
Even a fluffy down comforter pulled up over messy sheets will look polished.
Fold or hang clothes and put away jewelry (4 minutes).
Even better: Resist the urge to toss them somewhere in the first place! Put them away as you take them off.
Straighten out the night-table surface (30 seconds).
Take last night’s water glass to the kitchen, stow your reading glasses in a drawer, and straighten books or magazines.

Living Room

Tidy the sofa (2 minutes).
It’s likely the focus of the room, so neaten it. Fluff the pillows and fold the throws.
Pick up crumbs with a handheld vacuum (1 minute).
Concentrate on surfaces in plain sight: sofa cushions, coffee table, and rugs in the middle of the room. Look for dust bunnies, too.
Wipe tables and spot-clean cabinets where you see fingerprints (1 minute).
Use a microfiber cloth or a Swiffer cloth to pick up dust. If the surfaces are streaked or sticky, use a moist cloth.
Straighten coffee table books and magazines (2 minutes).
Toss old newspapers and corral the remote controls into one place (a drawer, if possible).
Clear major clutter (5 minutes).
Stash video games, toys, and anything else you might trip over.

Organize And Clean Closets

Step 1. Install Shelves and/or Cabinets
Shelves and cabinets add storage space and can keep clutter in place. They can also give you room for folded clothes and organizing detergent, fabric softener and other laundry supplies.

Keep your shelves organized. Storage containers are great for stowing away items you don't need all the time, keeping them clean and dust-free. With storage containers, you can keep similar items on the same shelf. This will make finding everything from holiday decorations to extra blankets easier. Try keeping a smaller storage container around for those items lost in the washer/dryer like coins, buttons, etc.

Helpful Tip:

A small trash bin for lint and used dryer sheets is a great thing to have handy next to the washer and dryer.

Step 2. Use Laundry Hampers or Sorters
It may go without saying, but the more organized your dirty laundry is, the easier things will be when it comes time to do the wash. A hamper or a basket will keep your dirty laundry easy to handle before the wash; a sorter will help you organize dirty laundry into loads before laundry day.

Step 3. Get a Clothes Rack
Setting up a drying rack next to the washer gives you the perfect place to hang clothes as they come out of the washer, especially delicates. A drying rack not only lets you lay clothes flat to dry, but with hangers, you can also hang garments from the rack. That'll keep you from scattering wet clothes all around the laundry room, perched on every available hanging place.

Step 4. Use a Folding Table
A folding table or rollaway cart is a great resource for folding clothes as they come out of the dryer. A table or a cart is there for you when you need it and easy to put away when you don't, keeping your laundry room organized when it's not laundry day.

Clean Out Closets

When you’re spring cleaning this year, don’t forget the bedroom and linen closets. These nooks and crannies need a good dressing up as well. Once you’ve emptied everything and vacuumed and dusted the closet, follow these steps:

Step 1. Have the Right Tools
Make closet organizing a priority for your yearly spring cleaning tasks. Look for closet organizer kits with adjustable shelves. These can be easily moved and reconfigured as your storage needs change. To maximize your closet’s functionality, try multi-pocket shoe organizers that hang on the inside or outside of closet doors. These handy organizers also make the perfect holder for hosiery, scarves, ties, belts and other accessories. Finally, consider installing additional shelving above a hanger rod. Reclaim that wasted space and increase your storage.

Step 2. Be Practical, Think Ahead
A key part of spring cleaning can be donating items you no longer use. As you organize, keep in mind how often you use different items in your closet. Items worn often should be easily accessible, stored at a height between your shoulders and your knees. Items used less frequently can be stored on higher shelves or in bins at ground level.

If you haven't worn a piece of clothing since you cleaned out your closet last year, consider donating it. Get rid of unnecessary clutter. Don't forget to leave plenty of space for future clothing purchases and items still in the laundry.
