We know that cleanliness is important, but at what price? It’s bad enough that antibacterial soap is contributing to the growing drug-resistant bacteria dilemma, but now new research suggests that using too much bleach may increase the risk of developing chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), a serious and often deadly lung condition.

A recent study found that nurses who used disinfectants to clean surfaces at least once a week had a 24-percent to 32-percent increased risk of developing COPD over the course of eight years compared to nurses who used these products less frequently. This link remained even after researchers made adjustments for other COPD risk factors such as age, smoking status, body mass index, and ethnicity.

"Our findings provide further evidence of the effects of exposure to disinfectants on respiratory problems, and highlight the urgency of integrating occupational health considerations into guidelines for cleaning and disinfection in healthcare settings such as hospitals,” explained study author Orianne Dumas, a pulmonologist at the French Institute of Health and Medical Research,...

PERRY, Ga. — Tree crews from around the country were still arriving at the Georgia National Fairgrounds late Sunday in preparation for Hurricane Irma cleanup to the south.

Hundreds of bucket trucks had parked in straight lines and were ready for deployment, likely after the storm has passed on Tuesday.

One crew had used duct tape to send the storm a message: "Irma, here we come."

"It's amazing what they have done in the last 48 hours," said Philip Gentry Jr., agricultural director for the fairgrounds. "It's a mini city over there."

Perry is a city about 30 minutes south of Macon and near the center of Georgia and two hour's drive from the Florida line.

Gentry's team set up a temporary lounge in the goat and sheep lounge for the tree crews, complete with big-screen TVs.

ROCHESTER — Gail Evans and Marta Ramos have one thing in common: They have each cleaned offices for one of the most innovative, profitable and all-around successful companies in the United States.

For Ms. Evans, that meant being a janitor in Building 326 at Eastman Kodak’s campus in Rochester in the early 1980s. For Ms. Ramos, that means cleaning at Apple`s headquarters in Cupertino, Calif., in the present day.

In the 35 years between their jobs as janitors, corporations across America have flocked to a new management theory: Focus on core competence and outsource the rest. The approach has made companies more nimble and more productive, and delivered huge profits for shareholders. It has also fueled inequality and helps explain why many working-class Americans are struggling even in an ostensibly healthy economy.

Bay Area workers are joining the national 'Fight for $15' protest and are part of a nationwide union organized Labor Day action. (LiPo Ching/Bay Area News Group)

Outside a McDonald’s restaurant on North First Street in San Jose, protesters agitated for $15 minimum wage, then stormed through the restaurant, banging drums and calling on bullhorns for better pay — to the bewilderment of Opening Manager Chris Sin.

Marching on San Tomas Aquino Creek Trail next to Dell, demonstrators scolded the tech giant for dumping janitorial contractors last year after workers won the right to unionize, and for replacing them with lower-paid, part-time workers. At at the Community Child Care Council of Santa Clara County, they demanded speedier contract negotiations for workers who unionized two years ago.

Despite the resurgent national economy, soaring local housing costs and stagnant wages have squeezed the lowest-paid workers.

“Workers in the service industry and child-care sector who are the backbone of our tech economy have not seen any of those economic gains and have been left behind,” said Riko Mendez, Local 521’s chief elected officer.

The disaster that is Tropical Storm Harvey is still ongoing. It will be some time before the waters recede and the effect on Houston can be fully assessed. But it is already clear the damage to property is immense. Tens of thousands of structures were impacted by floodwaters. Eventually, Houston will require massive cleanup, demolition, and reconstruction of individual homes, large buildings, and infrastructure.

    Epic-Flooding-Inundates-Houston-After-Hurricane-Harvey_1

The first concern will be the financial resources necessary: Will insurance companies cover all the losses, and how much of them? How will the federal government’s heavily indebted flood insurance program come up with the cash to pay claims? And how much additional assistance will the federal government provide?

There’s another problem: a lack of human resources. It takes a lot of labor to remove debris after a storm and then reinstall Sheetrock and drywall, rebuild floors, and fix electrical and plumbing systems. The work is resistant to automation. And it is but one way in which Houston, which was poorly situated to deal with a hurricane, may also be poorly situated to recover from it.

A federal lawsuit against the Detroit school district is officially over.

U.S. District Judge Mark Goldsmith signed off on the dismissal of the lawsuit today, more than a week after the district's board of education approved a $28-million settlement with Sodexo Management, the janitorial services company.

When the weather starts to cool down and you feel a nip in the air, it means that cold and flu season are just around the corner. Although there is no sure-fire way to avoid catching a cold or the flu, there are a number of things you can do to reduce your risk of these illnesses this fall and winter. On this page, we've rounded up the most important information from Live Science on how to help prevent cold and flu, and what to do if you get sick.

Cold and flu infections both cause similar symptoms, and they are both more common in the winter months compared to other times of the year. But these illnesses have important differences. For example:

Only influenza viruses cause the flu, while many different viruses can cause colds.

There is a vaccine to prevent the flu, while there is no vaccine to prevent the common cold.

Adults have an average of two to three colds a year, but only get the flu about twice a decade. Kids get colds and the flu more frequently.
