NEW YORK, March 29, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -ABM, a leading provider of facility solutions, has been named a preferred partner and awarded a five-year janitorial services contract at LaGuardia Airport’s Terminal B by LaGuardia Gateway Partners, the private operator and developer of Terminal B. This includes servicing the existing Terminal B, as well as the new state-of-the-art terminal that will open in phases through 2022.

“We are excited to partner with LaGuardia Gateway Partners on this amazing project,” says Don Stephens, President of Aviation, ABM. “As an industry leader in facility services and solutions with one of the industry’s largest aviation service portfolios, we are uniquely positioned to provide best-in-class cleaning for the flying public with our outstanding people, innovative standards and materials, and an environmental focus.”

HALIFAX—Dozens of people rallied outside a downtown Halifax office building Monday in support of a group of Black janitors who were fired from their jobs after they revealed plans to file a human rights complaint based on allegations of racial discrimination.

Protesters gather outside the Founders Square building Monday. Before losing their jobs abruptly last week, a group of Black janitors were to be laid off due to a contract termination.

About 70 people gathered outside Founders Square to support janitorial workers, who were told they would be laid off at the end of this week, but were terminated last Friday after the allegations were made public.

Darius Mirshahi, an organizer with the Service Employees International Union Local 2, said the group will file another complaint alleging that the workers were fired abruptly for complaining about alleged racism.

Traditionally the cleaning sector has been heavy on harsh chemicals, but that is changing as consumers become more environmentally aware. However, not all companies have joined the party, with many choosing to alter their marketing instead of their products.

Below you’ll find some of the most common marketing tricks used to sell cleaning products to the eco-conscious consumer.

“All natural” doesn’t always mean safe

The term “all natural” has become such a marketing buzzword that it now means almost nothing. One thing it doesn’t necessarily mean is “safe”.

Take ammonia, for example, which is a naturally occurring substance. It’s a compound made up of nitrogen and hydrogen (which I’m sure you’ll remember from the periodic table). Ammonia, while considered harmless in small amounts, can wreak havoc in concentrated quantities.

    Dear Davi,

Daily life with dogs and cats can make staying tidy difficult. The struggle for cleanliness in a cloud of dust and fur is real. How can I keep my home feeling fresh while protecting my pets from harmful cleaners?

    Minnie

    Minnie,

Muddy paw prints tracked across the floor and nose art on the window help make a house a home, but they also make a home dirtier, so dusting, mopping and scrubbing are a must. Still, your household chores don't necessarily need to be a pain when you have the right supplies. The stressful part is trying to choose products that are harmless to pets.

Some of the products that clean and disinfect homes pose a danger to dogs and cats. Topping the list of hazardous cleaning products are bleach, laundry detergent pods and phenol-based disinfectants, such as Lysol and Pine-Sol.

Bleach is a powerful disinfectant, but it's also a strong alkali-the opposite of an acid, ...

The family that two years ago made one of the greatest finds in sports collectibles history when they found seven Ty Cobb baseball cards printed between 1909 and 1911 have now found one more in the matching set.

'Miraculous' cache of century-old Ty Cobb baseball cards found in crumpled paper bag

"It falls under the category of 'you can't make this stuff up,'" said Joe Orlando, president of Professional Sports Authenticator of Newport Beach, California. The company verified the new card and valued it at $250,000

"The initial discovery, it was a real shock to them," Orlando said. "They put the cleaning on hold for a while ... later they knew what they were looking for, and in a dusty box between two books, there was another one."

SAN ANTONIO - Just in time for spring cleaning, Consumer Reports tested popular carpet cleaning machines.

We use a Georgia red clay so that we can see how well these machines are removing embedded dirt from the carpet itself,” said Haniya Rae, Consumer Reports' home editor.

Testers prepped the samples with a measured amount of the red clay soil and wet it with water. The samples were left to dry overnight.

Then the machines were put to work, and testers found some big differences. Testers also factored in how well each machine dried the carpet samples, because a wet carpet can lead to mildew or mold growth.

The Durham Board of Education has voted to make custodians Durham Public Schools employees once again. This means ending its contract with an outsource management company, acquiring cleaning equipment, and giving custodial staff higher pay and benefits. The change will cost DPS about $1.1 million.

A sign indicates the janitor closet inside a Wake County public school.

Arasi Adkins, the district’s assistant superintendent for human resources, cautioned that the custodians would join other so-called "classified" employees -- like bus drivers -- whose salaries have been in flux for years.

“There are probably over 1,000 people, other classified staff members, that we really need to think about,” Adkins said. “If we do move to an in-house model we'll have another large group of people coming to the board asking for raises as well. I believe it's over a million dollars if we were to fully fund that, too.”
