Over 75 students attended Wednesday night’s “When The Campus is Asleep: Voices of Female Custodians Who Work the Night Shift at Stanford” event, which featured a conversation with four female custodians from United Service Workers West, a subdivision of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU-USWW).

The custodians gave up their only break during their eight hour-long night shift, which starts at 6 p.m. and ends at 2:30 a.m. each night, to voice their demands for better work conditions at the event.

The meeting, co-hosted by the Stanford Solidarity Network (SSN), took place in the Women’s Community Center. Rebecca Armendariz, political representative for SEIU-SSW, served as translator between the Spanish-speaking custodians and the audience.

Harsh flu season winding down, but it left its mark: Highest child death count in at least 5 years

A brutal flu season is finally on its last legs, but it has taken a heavy toll, including the highest death count among children in at least five years, health officials say.

    INFLUENZA Virus Isolated

Low levels of “flu-like illness” are still popping up in a few spots, according to the latest report from the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.  But the coast-to-coast epidemic of midwinter is history.

“We never officially declare flu season over … there’s always flu circulating, even in the summer,” said Lynnette Brammer, head of domestic influenza surveillance at CDC. But, she said, the flu has done most of its nasty work — for now.

Spring cleaning: 10 tricks for saving money all year

    1. Drain the hot water heater

“Sediment builds up over time at the bottom of the tank, causing corrosion,” says John Bodrozic, co-founder of HomeZada. “Partially draining it removes the sediment and keeps the heater running more efficiently—and keeps it running longer.”

    2. Check ductwork connections

Ducts in either the attic or crawl space can sag over time, and then the connections become loose. “If this happens, you end up spending more on utility costs because the air you’re paying to heat or cool is escaping from the loose ductwork into the attic or crawl space, not into your living space,” Bodrozic says.
