According to OSHA, "Bloodborne pathogens are infectious microorganisms in the human blood that can cause disease in humans." Some of the more well known bloodborne pathogens include HBV, HCV, HIV, and AIDS. Bloodborne pathogens spread through bodily fluids of and infected person and enter the body of another person. Some common forms of spread can include needles, blood, vomit, saliva, etc.

Because of the nature of bloodborne pathogens, it is essential to raise awareness within cleaning employees of the dangerous associated with these diseases in order to raise a sense of importance of the systems set in place. This will encourage employees to follow the processes set for their protection and limit liability as a business owner. Common symptoms include "fatigue, stomach pain, loss of appetite and nausea." Both you and your employees should be on lookout for these symptoms after coming into contact with the bodily fluids of another person. It is also important to know that these symptoms can take 2 to 6 months to even years for symptoms to develop.

Ways to lower the risk of bloodborne pathogens exposure includes following safety procedures to cleaning bodily fluids. Which includes wearing PPE, properly handing items that could be contaminated, and placing contaminated items in their designated locations. By following these steps you ensure the health of you and your co-workers.

Why is properly Cleaning a health facility so important? That is an easy answer.

Hospitals are one of the dirtiest places you can work and germ filled. Contamination is everywhere here. Watching these videos it shows how many areas they are and steps to take to make sure you are safe as well as the staff and patients to prevent the spread of germs and diseases.

Also to protect yourself make sure you are wearing PPE at all times, gown, masks, glasses and gloves. Hand washing is also very important as well as using sanitizer when hands do not seem dirty to kill off any germs, virus on your hands.

Keeping rooms cleaned also helps the patient as well as everyone else not get infected with anything. One of the most important thing is to clean the hard surfaces of objects in the room and not to touch anything without gloves so you do not spread any illness to anyone.

Bloodborne pathogens are a potential threat in any industry, I work in the automotive industry and while it may not be as prevalent as some other professions, it resides here as well. We process as many as 1000 vehicles a week and the threats range from used needles to blood stains to spit bottles.

We have a lot of the younger crowd, you know "the invincible ones" that throw caution to the wind and just want to hurry up and get done. Without proper BBP training they don't realize their life could change in an instant. These employees must know the dangers to avoid contracting HIV or Hepatitis and taking it home to their families.

Our daily goal is to send our employees home in the same condition they arrived, making sure they are wearing the proper PPE.  It's imperative to spend the time it takes to have shop meetings to explain the dangers of BBP, to explain why we look into seat pockets before we reach and why we don't shove our hands under the seats to get some trash out. Awareness goes a long way toward prevention.

Our rule for potential threats is the same as if you find a firearm, if you see a firearm, needle or blood, don't touch it, stop what you're doing, lock the vehicle and take the keys and notify a supervisor, at that point a supervisor or manager can proceed with assessing the threat.

Great customer service involves the active implementation of the 7 essentials for excellent customer service along with the execution of the L.A.S.T. method when a problem does arise between you and a customer. One must understand the three things every customer wants which are to be heard, understood, and cared for. One must ensure that everybody within the company smiles, makes eye contact and comments to people that they pass by. You listen to the customer and empathize with the customer with the customer when a problem does arise. You create solutions and clarify the situation to your client so that both parties know that the issue is being acknowledged and that steps are being taken in order to correct the issue and prevent them from happening again. Lastly, you follow up with customers to make sure that they are happy with the changes and if they are not then you repeat the process until they are.

Because of this, customer service is an area of any cleaning business where it should not be taken lightly due to the implications it may have. A customer wants to avoid having a bad experience and would rather go to a competent business where their needs and wants are met, which is why customers should trust IJCSA Members. Not only does the IJCSA Customer Service Certification prepare businesses to handle a variety of scenarios with customers, they also equip us with the adequate knowledge to tackle onsite problems in an efficient manner, eliminating many unforeseen headaches to both parties. In the event a dispute does occur, we are fully prepared to deescalate heated situations in order to reach a compromise where both parties are satisfied with the level of work performed.

How You Can Implement Medical Cleaning Practices Into Other Residential & Commercial Cleaning Situations

Implementing medical cleaning practices into residential and commercial cleaning would be a great idea. It would be great because germs, bacteria, and bloodborne pathogens are not just in a healthcare environment. These illness causing microorganisms are everywhere.

Wearing PPE like gloves for example should be used when you are cleaning everywhere. It protects you and any possible cross contamination if used properly. Coming into whatever building you are cleaning starting from the left or right and continuing throughout the entire building helps back tracking possibly spreading germs back into areas that have already been cleaned.

Being trained and knowing that there is a difference between cleaning and sanitizing. Cleaning using soap and water or some sort of soap solution to free surfaces of dirt, dust, and other allergens. Sanitizing is the reduction of germs associated with a surface. Cleaning is considered simple, whereas sanitization requires a set of standard procedures to be done. Hence, sanitization is a little more complex than cleaning. However, both processes have to be followed to achieve a safe and clean environment.

Everyone not only cleaners can have a helping hand in making sure germs and viruses stay at a minimum by having good personal hygiene. Staying home when you are sick. Wearing a mask or coughing into elbow when able. Washing and or sanitizing hands to free them of dirt and germs. Let's all stay healthy and minimize the spread of germs by properly cleaning, hiring professionals like the members here on IJCSA site, and just in general taking care of ourselves during ill times.

It is extremely important for all cleaning staff and employees to know and understand what bloodborne pathogens are to prevent contracting diseases such as HBV or HIV/AIDS.  Bloodborne pathogens are microorganisms in human blood (body fluids) that pass disease if exposed. There are several ways to become exposed, thru the mouth, nose, open cuts/wounds or puncture exposure.

Several methods of safety precautions can limit exposure, such as gloves, protective eyewear, hand washing, never reusing towels or sponges and disinfectant cleaners.  Disposing of all potentially hazard materials in proper containers (red or orange biohazard bags or sharps). All equipment used is to be sanitized after each use to ensure no cross contamination occurs.

If each employee or staff member follows OSHA procedure limited exposure or spreading of infectious diseases will be at a lower risk rate. All employees are required to have a written exposure control plan that is updated yearly for accidental exposure. If exposed, immediately notify employer and follow guidelines.
